Grubering Under the Influence of Cataracts

So, as some of you know, I’m a Gruber driver. Granny + Uber = Gruber. I’ve been Grubering now for several years and on most days I love it.
My teenage aliens tell me about their lives. Well, actually, I eavesdrop. They seem to forget I’m in the car half the time.
They usually have those white plugs in their ears facetiming the friend they just left at school five minutes earlier or watching YouTube videos.
Most of the time Grubering is easy peasy. But sometimes Grubering them is torture. Specifically when the sun goes down.
And why you ask?
Because I can’t see very well at night. The lights put on quite a show for me. A bit of a flashback from my hippie days. Not so safe to Gruber when the oncoming cars look like incoming asteroids.
That’s when I let the alien take the wheel. She removes her communication device, sets the Bluetooth to play her music (which, fortunately I enjoy) and I sit back and relax.
Sort of.
There’s always a bit of tension creeping up my back like a spider imitating James Bond on a mission. So, I often close my eyes.
On the night of the crash, boom, bang my eyes were semi-open until my alien slammed on the brakes, missing the car in front of us by a whisper.
The guy who rear-ended us had his eyes somewhere else. He confessed that he wasn’t paying attention.
That was his excuse!
Obviously not, or he wouldn’t have crashed into us. And I mean smashed. We thrust forward and backwards and forwards again like bull on steroids having finally found his soulmate.
The back window shattered. Glass spit everywhere like. Fortunately, everyone was fine.
The jolt shook up my ninety-four- year old mom sitting in the backseat. She was positive a short, fat man was responsible for the accident. I don’t know where he came from. She has been talking about needing a man lately.
Anyway, we survived the not so mini fender bender.
My granddaughter was a bit shaken.
I booked my cataract surgery.
Even if I’m not in my Gruber seat, I guess I should keep my eyes open and see what’s going on around me.
