Sunday Revelations
Growth and Competition
A very, very short story
A Sunday as any other. I’m working outdoors, repairing a wooden shutter that had a couple of rough years against the Italian Alpine Seasons.
I take a break from the blazing heat and my attention is drawn to my children that jump up and down in the trampoline in the courtyard. They are, as usual, competing against each other and in this particular moment, they are trying to see who can jump more times in a row. Their competition pushes them to continuously break their own records but also breaking the records of the other sibling. Eventually, exhausted, one of them loses and starts to cry.
I observe them, one smiling in joy the other crying in desperation. A reflection comes to me. When we compete against others to push our own growth, eventually someone always beats us! If one competes against him-self then one can never lose.
