We all remember the story of the tortoise and the hare, right? The one where the moral of the story is “Slow and steady wins the race”? Well in the quest for building a 6 figure indie publishing business, that is great advice, but there are action steps you must take in addition to just plodding along if you want to succeed.

The bedrock of any successful business is a business plan. Once you have established this foundational structure, consider the following tips for growing and sustaining your indie publishing biz:

1. Define your target audience:

Clearly identify who your ideal customers and readers are within your target areas. It is ok to have more than one area you focus on in your business as long as you take the time to understand and deliver to customer preferences, needs, and buying habits. For me, my target audiences overlap, but it’s a small number that grew over time. Starting with one or two areas and mastering them will help build a solid foundation of credibility.

2. Build a strong online presence:

Create a professional website and establish a presence on social media platforms relevant to your target audience. Regularly share engaging content, interact with your audience, and showcase your books. Your social media presence, newsletter content, and even your interactions with readers here on Medium and other platforms should always point them back to your website. This is your home base. Invite your audience in and be a gracious host, providing tasty tidbits of value every time they visit.

3. Leverage online marketplaces:

Utilizing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark to publish and distribute your books is a key component to successfully building your publishing empire. These platforms offer wide reach and easy access to a global audience. Also, don’t sleep on the social media marketplaces. You can integrate and sell your publishing services through business profiles on Instagram and Facebook for even more exposure.

4. Collaborate with influencers:

Speaking of social media, take the time to identify influencers, bloggers, or reviewers who have a following in your “niche” areas. Offer them free copies of your books in exchange for honest reviews or promotional content. If you have eBook or audio versions of your publications, you can share those and eliminate printing or shipping costs. Find out their preferred way of reviewing books and dive in. As your books are promoted, you will also increase awareness of your publishing biz.

5. Offer digital formats:

Speaking of eBooks. In addition to print books, e-books and audiobooks can exponentially expand your reach and your business success. These options allow you to tap into the growing digital market and cater to readers who prefer different formats. I recently ‘read’ the powerful and phenomenal, but very long book ‘Caste’ by Nobel prize winner, Isabel Wilkerson. Coming in at just under 500 pages, I was able to complete the book much faster by using audiobook version on my daily commute. Aside from being a Nobel laureate, Ms. Wilkerson is herself, a business. Offering her latest book in an audiobook format is a great business move.

6. Engage in email marketing:

Build an email list of interested readers and potential customers. Regularly send out newsletters with updates, exclusive content, and special offers to nurture relationships and boost book sales. Bonus tip: You don’t have to wait until you have hundreds or thousands of subscribers to start email marketing. You can start small. Just be consistent (but not spammy), and offer interest and value.

7. Attend book fairs and events:

Participate in local book fairs, conferences, and events related to your niche. This will help you connect with readers, network with industry professionals, and gain exposure for your publishing biz and your publication portfolio. I was so excited to engage with a local children’s book author who shared his experience of having a book signing at Barnes and Nobel. He stressed the importance of supporting other authors by attending similar events to promote and purchase their books. It is also important to show up in the industry spaces such as regional and even online conferences and webinars. They are always chock full of ideas, opportunities, and new connections.

8. Explore crowdfunding:

Consider using crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo to fund new book projects. Even if your project isn’t funded, the process is beneficial for helping you pull together a marketing plan for your business and polishing your ideas. Crowdfunding can generate pre-orders, create buzz, and if funded, provide additional financial support to your business. A solid, well orchestrated pitch can highlight your business and publishing acumen.

9. Seek partnerships and collaborations:

Look for opportunities to collaborate with other authors, illustrators, or businesses within your niche. Joint promotions, bundle offers, or cross-promotions can expand your reach and attract new readers. There may be authors, experts, or unique writers here on Medium that you can partner with on projects, so be sure to read, like, comment on, and follow other writers and publications.

10. Continuously improve and learn:

Stay informed about the latest industry trends, marketing strategies, and publishing tools. Attend the webinars, join writing clubs and publishing communities, and even your local chamber of commerce. Consistently invest in your business and professional development to refine your skills and stay competitive. I have two writers retreats and a business boot camp on my radar, and I can’t wait to immerse myself in these exciting and effective environments. It will definitely improve my craft and connect me more deeply to my village of successful, supportive writers and publishers.

Remember, success in the indie publishing industry takes time and persistence. Stay dedicated to producing quality content, nurturing your audience, and adapting your strategies based on feedback and market trends.
