Grok-1 Is Now Available To X Premium Subscribers
Last week, Elon Musk announced that Grok-1, a new AI chatbot by x.AI, will be available to X Premium Plus subscribers (costs $8 per month) and can be accessed through the X side menu on web, iOS, and Android devices.
Grok is notable for being the largest open-source language model, with 314 billion parameters. This is more than double the size of OpenAI’s GPT-3, which was considered a significant breakthrough upon its release in 2020.
How to Access Grok-1 on X.com
X Premium users can access Grok by visiting X.com/i/grok.
You can switch between two modes:
- Fun Mode: In this mode, Grok may use more colorful language and produce responses that are less grounded in reality. Grok in fun mode also spews more falsehoods.
- Regular Mode: When using Regular Mode, Grok’s responses are generally more accurate, although it may still make occasional errors, such as incorrect dates or timelines.

Regular Mode: Babies are made through a process that begins with sexual intercourse between a male and a female. During sexual intercourse, the male’s penis releases sperm into the female’s vagina. If a sperm cell reaches and fertilizes an egg cell inside the female’s body, conception occurs. This usually happens in the fallopian tube, which connects the ovaries to the uterus.
Real-time Knowledge
One of Grok’s most impressive features is its ability to incorporate real-time news and events from X’s updates into its knowledge base.
This sets it apart from other AI chatbots like GPT-4, Claude Opus, and Gemini Ultra, which have knowledge bases that are limited to a specific cut-off date.
My First Impressions and Improvement Suggestions
Grok’s real-time knowledge integration is a notable feature, making it feel well-informed, particularly when asked about specific X feeds or trending topics.
Fun Mode offers an entertaining experience, although it may not be the most reliable source of information.
After a few hours of playing with Grok, there are some areas where I think the user experience could be improved:
- Where’s the regenerate button? It’s highly inconvenient to regenerate a response without starting a new chat session.
- A history page would be helpful for users to review previous conversations.
- The ability to read and discuss PDF files or other documents would be a valuable addition.

As I see it, X intends to make money off Grok by putting behind a paywall. Is it worth it, though? Yes, it’s a nice addition to the premium subscription. But if you’re only paying to access the AI chatbot, then I don’t think it’s worth it. Go use Claude or ChatGPT instead—they're free to use.
