Summary

Rosalind Pagan reflects on her visit to Manchester, juxtaposing the city's industrial history and current state of deprivation with a personal narrative of a fleeting romance, all inspired by a captivating graffiti portrait.

Abstract

During a visit to Manchester, Rosalind Pagan was initially taken aback by the city's grimy buildings and stark deprivation, remnants of its past as the world's first industrial city. Despite this, she found herself entranced by a graffiti artwork of a woman whose enigmatic expression mirrored her own contemplative and bittersweet feelings. At the time, Pagan was involved in a relationship with a younger man, aware that it was temporary and destined to end. The graffiti seemed to symbolize her foresight of this transient connection, as she envisioned a future without him. This photo story is Pagan's response to the "April Six Word Photo Story Challenge," expressing gratitude to Mary Chang Story Writer for the inspiration.

Opinions

  • Pagan perceives Manchester as a city haunted by its prosperous industrial past, now struggling with economic hardship.
  • The graffiti artwork, particularly the woman's face, resonates deeply with Pagan, reflecting her own complex emotions and transient romance.
  • She acknowledges the inevitability of her relationship's end, seeing it as clearly as if it were written on a wall, much like the graffiti itself.
  • Pagan identifies herself as a "messy matriarch, dater of disastrous men, writer of provocative prose," suggesting a self-awareness and willingness to explore personal themes through her writing.

April Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Graffiti & Street Art”

I saw a future without you.

When I first visited Manchester in England, I was shocked at how murky and ugly so many of the buildings were, even in the heart of the city.

Despite all the quirky cafes and art supply stores, Manchester has never shaken off its history as the first industrial city in the world.

Britain once produced half the world’s cotton cloth without growing a single scrap of the plant, with 108 cotton mills in Manchester at the peak of production.

The city is now considered to be one of the most deprived areas in the UK.

Ghosts of more affluent times haunt the streets and their inhabitants.

In the middle of all this dirt and despair, I was captivated by the expression on this woman’s face. It’s a bit inscrutable — like the Mona Lisa you can’t tell if she’s contemplative or truly sad, but unlike da Vinci’s muse, she is staring off into the distance, not towards the observer.

I was dating a guy a lot younger than me when I visited Manchester and I have fun memories of our time together. But I knew even then it wouldn’t last.

I saw a future without him as clearly as if it were written on a wall.
