Summary

The website content discusses a response to a writing challenge inspired by Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham" and his work "Design For Death," while reflecting on the portrayal of pacifism and the necessity of combat during wartime.

Abstract

The article titled "Green Eggs And Ham: And design for death" is an author's exploration in response to a writing challenge posed by H. L. Warren. It juxtaposes the whimsical nature of Dr. Seuss's famous children's book with his lesser-known work, "Design For Death," which includes a script co-authored by Seuss and a political cartoon that criticizes pacifism during World War II. The author contemplates the irony of celebrating peace and brotherhood while facing the harsh reality of war, particularly highlighting Seuss's stance on the necessity of defeating the enemy despite the depressing nature of conflict. The piece also includes a quote from Jim McAulay questioning the logic behind using artificial flavoring for food and real lemons for detergent, perhaps as a metaphor for the absurdity of war.

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges the challenge of writing about a topic as iconic as "Green Eggs and Ham" and connects it to the concept of a hamlet, suggesting a playful association with an omelet.
  • There is a critical view of Dr. Seuss's portrayal of pacifism, particularly his mockery of pacifist John Haynes Holmes, indicating a disagreement with Seuss's wartime sentiments.
  • The author seems to share Seuss's view that during times of conflict, the focus should be on defeating the enemy, as evidenced by the inclusion of Seuss's quote about killing "Japs" despite the

This is my response to a writing challenge by H. L. Warren

Why write about those green eggs and that ham? Could I, should I, would I, write about them? Write about green eggs on Saint Patrick’s day. Is a hamlet an omelet with some ham? I do not like you Theodor Geisel You yap about japs, and wrote Design For Death.

Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) Co-authored the script for Design For Death and published a cartoon in a New York newspaper mocking the pacifist John Haynes Holmes. This is his response to those who defended Dr. Holmes.

“Sure, I believe in love, brotherhood and a cooing white pigeon on every man’s roof. I even think it’s nice to have pacifists and strawberry festivals in between wars. But right now, when the Japs are planting their hatchets in our skulls, it seems like a hell of a time for us to smile and warble: “Brothers!” it is a rather flabby battle cry. If we want to win, we’ve got to kill Japs, whether it depresses John Haynes Holmes or not. We can get palsy-walsy afterward with those that are left.”
