Some things do change like Twitter being renamed to “X”, which is not exciting at all. However, when Green Day’s song “American Idiot” makes a lyric change to slam the Make American Great Again (MAGA) crowd things will get heated. Originally, the lyrics in the song were “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of a MAGA agenda.”

This did not go unnoticed by some of the world’s most powerful and hypocritical voices. The owner of “X” Elon Musk had this to say about the band’s lyric change below.

If you want to see how much debate this started type on “X” the following phrase to see the top results: “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”

MAGA agenda phrase trending on X.

Some went on the defense for the California-based band like in the Tweet below.

While others thought the way Musk poked fun was original.

And hilarious exchanges like the one below illustrate free speech. You can disagree or agree as long as it is debated in a constructive manner.

Origins of the song “American Idiot” and the context

It may not come as a surprise that Green Day is not a fan of leaders within the world of politics. In addition, they are not afraid to insult their own country and leaders that claim to represent them. They wrote this song at in opposition to the Iraq War, which was one of the most controversial decisions since the Vietnam War carried out by the Bush Administration.

The song was released almost 20 years ago. It debuted on Sept. 21, 2004 and it is considered a protest song or even an anthem.

It is important to have debates and conversations with people who think differently. What is the point of marrying our entire lives our ideologies or echo chambers? Because it has become to common and not everybody prescribes to the extremes.

It is important to remember that we can all disagree. The art of debating has to be grounded in respect and that it advances a compromise. We are not enemies because we are all in the pursuit of happiness and harmony for our common good.
