Leaders are so vital to a thriving community. We need great leaders at so many levels.

Leaders within families, teams, organizations, and communities allow us to lead meaningful lives. It is clear to me we need to foster outstanding leadership.

What makes a great leader?

Great leaders are those who seek to leave a lasting legacy.

Lesson to Learn

Outstanding leaders in business, nonprofits, and government are essential to a well-functioning society.

In my experience, great leaders are focused on leaving a lasting legacy that serves the mission and the stakeholders of the group.

A lasting legacy is the hallmark of leaders who attempt to lead with a calling to a life-giving mission. Self-sacrifice and deep levels of service to others are necessary.

They make the essential decisions, hire and support the right people, guide daily efforts, and leave the organization or effort better off than when they assumed leadership responsibilities.

Answer for Me

I have made it my mission to be a student of leadership. I have looked for examples and methods demonstrated by outstanding individuals who lead.

For me, it is a sacred honor and duty to be the best leader I can be.

In all facets of my life, I have tried to be a better leader daily. Each person can teach me how to be better. Even failed leadership examples can teach me. Leadership is a verb for me because of the actions and words of a leader matter. Great leaders always leave a lasting legacy that endures past their tenure.

The great leaders that I have served with inspire me.

Their very lives are examples of how I should lead. Their character speaks of integrity, authenticity, compassion, and a focus on improvement. Excellence with humility is their calling card.

Action

Become a student of leadership. Make it your mission to develop daily into the leader your family, team, organization, or community needs.

Find ways to lead through service to others. Support other leaders who are seeking to leave lasting legacies.

When you find ways to guide and support other leaders, you are helping to change the world.

When we all do this well, our families, teams, organizations, and communities become much better places.

Each day, choose to lead with an eye toward leaving a legacy. Today’s actions create the future.

Ensure you are thinking about the kind of leader you are as you interact with others. Take the time to care deeply as you interact with those around you.

Seek sustainable actions, support the growth of others, and leave the world a better place.

When we all do this daily, we build a legacy that will endure well after we are no longer leading our current teams and organizations.
