Grateful at the Laundromat
Spinning Tales of Thankfulness

The laundromat is not where one gets reflective moments and expressions of thankfulness, certainly not. It’s more popularly known as that boring weekly ritual — sorting, washing, waiting. But many hours at the local laundromat have turned a different story — one of surprising thankfulness and tiny joys.
Every Sunday afternoon, armed with a bag of clothes and a book, I would head to the laundromat. It was an odd ambiance, filled with the rhythmic hum of the washing machines and a warm, soapy smell that seemed to take weeks hanging in the air to become something comforting. In that humble laundromat, I found pockets of peace and something like a community. As I stared at the dryer, watching my clothes whirl about, I couldn’t help chuckling at the thought of all those faces, the students, busy parents, and even the elderly.
But more than the people,
it was the act of doing laundry itself that taught me gratitude
Something about going through clothes
— every one of them literally holding memories and moments —
Which feels like I’m sorting through life. Quickly, laundry day turned into a day of contemplation for me where I could think about all the blessings and experiences each piece of garment held.
Almost funny, you’d think that such routine, mundane little things as folding the clean clothes would make you appreciate the world they offered.
Really, it was some kind of normal, or at least stable, environment in a world that to be honest sometimes seemed at least a little bit like chaos.
The laundromat captured life in its rinse and dry, truly living in the cycle it is on — yup…. it’s, never a blank moment.
It’s a small reminder that this world is always in motion, always cleaning and refreshing — just how one would ideally want life to be.
So, while it might just seem like a place to clean clothes, the laundromat, to me, has become a sanctuary of sorts.
Where each whirl of the spin held a thousand graces, and each fold spoke stories of thankfulness.
It shows at times how very ordinary places can instill in one the most extraordinary lessons in gratitude and togetherness.
