GR3 + GW-4 21mm Super Wide Angle Test Shot

GR3 + GW4 + GA1 + GV-1 ,GR21mmWide Angle Set

I had the opportunity to borrow the GW-4 and GA1 from a friend for a month or so and took many photos, so I have a good grasp of this wide-angle adapter combination’s… Let’s share some opinions and pictures…

With the addition of the GA1 and GW4, the GR3 is no longer a pocket camera. It is a pity that the hood of the GW4 is only made of soft plastic and has little texture.
When GA1 is added, the body will show the word Wide to show that GW4 is connected, but unfortunately, there is no 21mm GW4 label in the LR EXIF… What’s more, even though there is an electronic contact, there is still no lens correction file, which is a very obvious barrel modification problem XD
With the GA1 adapter ring, a 49mm UV / ND filter can be added…this should help prevent dust from entering the lens when it is extended… I am still in the habit of adding the GV-1 viewfinder composition, with the aperture closed to F8-F11 @1.5–2m for hyperfocal capture.

Undeniable barrel shift problem…

First of all, the biggest drawback of the GW4 combination to the author is its undeniable barrel shift problem… To be honest, whenever I take a close up shot or shoot some scenes with lines, it always makes me feel a bit difficult… Why not add a lens correction file to deal with such problems when there is an electronic contact… I can’t figure out or guess… If you think it’s not a problem, you can simply correct it under the post-production software, and the following simple after-effects can still be read…

Left: body raw straight out…Right: LR + 15 to fix deformation problem…
Look out for the T3 lamp post…
The building on the right…
Be aware of the need to avoid lines in your shots…

Excellent image…

I don’t know if it’s because GW3 > GW4 and 62mm > 72mm, but the GR3 with GW4 is very sharp at the corners and even sharper than the original GR3… Maybe the GW4 is a landscape lens with a higher saturation or sharpness of colour performance… Don’t worry about the image quality after transferring to GW4… The only possible problem is the glare resistance.

The following photos are taken with GR3 + GW4 / LR10.0 / TCP K64 Film Preset with simple post-adjustment of light and darkness etc…

It is also very reassuring to capture images at infinite distances…

Street Photography

21mm street photography means getting closer to the subject… it may be a bit difficult for some people, but the GR3+GW4 is still a bit low profile, and I often take hyperfocused shots at around 1m…

In practice, I mostly use the GR3 when I see a suitable scene and quickly attach it to the GR3, basically, it takes 1–2 seconds to complete the installation.

With Touch AF at close range, it’s easy to take pictures of meows…
If I had more time to shoot, I would have walked a little closer and brought more guide lines to capture the shot XD
Left: GA1+GW4 with cap approx. 280g… The GW4 is actually very well made, with a metallic feel and large lenses… Right: GR3+GA1+GW4 + Cap approx. 550g… The overall weight is quite heavy…

Is it worth buying?

The GW4 wide-angle lens adapter has been available since the GRD1/2…but the wide-angle lens combination back then was relatively light…I think adding the GW4 is not really light or in conflict with the GR3 pocket carry case design…it really depends on your shooting habits and usage. If you travel a lot or use the GR3 as your main camera, adding the GW4 in the middle of a photo shoot is very quick and convenient, it’s just a matter of whether you’ll take it with you… The other thing is that the GW4 can be used on the GR4, and the cycle time may be much longer than you think. You’ll be more than happy to add a little more weight for a wider angle of view…

The author suggests buying a used GA1 + GW4 or GA1 + GW3… Many used GW4 wide-angle combinations are very clean and new, but it is unnecessary to carry a wide-angle adapter for many people. The only thing is that it might take some time to find a second hand one… I have seen many GR3+GA1+GW3 combinations on the internet. The results are also excellent… maybe just a little bit of aperture reduction to F4-F5.6… the image will be very sharp at the edges… the deformation problem is not too far away anyway. Still, it could be lighter, flatter and smaller… images Quality/portability,/price are all different for each person.

Lastly, I am delighted with the GW4’s picture quality, or far above expectations, but the only drawback is the barrel shift…of course, if you avoid some linearity or don’t care too much, it’s excellent…
