GPT-4: Elon Musk and Tech Leaders Want AI Break
Are we going to witness an AI-pocalypse now?
Elon Musk and other tech bigwigs are urging AI labs to halt the development of super powerful AI systems for at least six months. They’re worried about the “profound risks” these systems pose to society and humanity. The Future of Life Institute, supported by Musk, published their letter.
GPT-4 Sparks Concern
This call for a pause comes after OpenAI announced GPT-4, an even stronger AI system than the one powering the famous chatbot, ChatGPT. GPT-4’s early tests showed it could draft lawsuits, ace standardized exams, and even build a website from a hand-drawn sketch.

The letter suggests a temporary stop on AI systems more potent than GPT-4. It recommends that independent experts use this break to establish and carry out protocols ensuring AI tools are safe “beyond a reasonable doubt.” If a pause isn’t put in place, the letter calls for governments to step in and impose a moratorium.
AI Pause and Rising Concerns
ChatGPT’s popularity sparked an AI development race among tech giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Amazon, Baidu, and Tencent. A bunch of startups are also working on AI writing assistants and image generators.
AI experts are increasingly worried about AI tools causing biased responses, spreading misinformation, and compromising consumer privacy. They’re also concerned about AI’s potential to disrupt professions, help students cheat, and alter our relationship with technology.
This letter highlights unease in and outside the industry about AI’s fast-paced advancements. Some governing bodies in China, the EU, and Singapore have already introduced early versions of AI governance frameworks.
What do I Think?
Well, just forget Elon Musk. I feel like he’s just mad since he didn’t hold onto any OpenAI shares and missed a golden chance. Now he’s trying to catch up by developing his own AI during this proposed six-month break. If we take a six-month break, countries like China or Russia might develop their own AI systems, which could end up being even more powerful than what we’d have.
GPT is on track to be remembered as one of the quickest growing, most groundbreaking inventions in human history. But if we hit the brakes for six months, that might not be the case.
