Abstract

truth that you sent your Son Jesus to bring us. It’s the way and reality of your Kingdom that he says we should believe and live (Mark 1:14–15). It brings the light of your glory flooding into my life. Gospel Worship in the Psalms: 3

“All Things Were Made New” in the Gospel. We Have “A New and Living Way.” Here, Live the Psalms in Light of Gospel Truth.

Here are more Psalms of the Old Testament, but seen through the eyes of the finished work of Jesus in the New Testament. II Corinthians 3:14–16 says Christians should not read the Old Testament without knowing the truth of the New. If we do, it’s like having a veil over our hearts, and we know God looks at our hearts and assesses them (I Sam 16:7).

In these Old Testament Psalms, I use gospel truth from the New. Also, Psalms often speak of God in the third person, but when appropriate, I address God in the first person so we relate to him more personally.

Psalm 16

Lord, without you there is no safety, and nothing in this world makes sense. There are not various gods to shop for. There is only you. And when I choose you, then you choose me too and make me a joint heir with Jesus in all you have (Rom 8:17). Your wise counsel is in your gospel, and Jesus tells me to believe and live it. I praise you for canceling my ticket to hell and giving me a ticket to heaven. Thank you for taking my hand and leading me to the right path: ‘The Gospel Road.’ Thank you for making me secure.

Psalm 17

I know you look at my heart, Lord, and you examine what is there. You see I try to follow you every step of the way. I know when I call on you that you will answer me in your timing, but you may not always tell me what I want to hear. But you always show me the wonder of your grace and love. Even though it often seems like people and things of the world are trying to crush me, you give me confidence and hope. I try to look you full in the face in all that I do and am.

Psalm 18

I love you Lord and I know you have my back. You are my rock of foundation. You always give me help when I need it. Even when I am attacked by people who don’t like me, you are there with me supporting me. God, you began to put all my pieces together when I gave my life to you. Now I am more alert to your presence and I don’t take you for granted. I try to include your will and ways in everything I think and do. I try to be an open book to you.

I try to be true to your gospel truth that you sent your Son Jesus to bring us. It’s the way and reality of your Kingdom that he says we should believe and live (Mark 1:14–15). It brings the light of your glory flooding into my life. Your gospel road is so straight and smooth even though life is not without potholes here and there that I must navigate around.

But when I’m on ‘The Gospel Road,’ I make much better mileage. My timing is better and I get to where I know I need to go faster. And I don’t have as much trouble with people in the world because they are not on your gospel road like I am. They are on ‘The Garbled Road.’ Life is not perfect on your road, but you rescue me from so many bad things on your road. Thus I live my life in thankfulness and gratitude to you. I sing your songs of worship.

Psalm 19

I just have to look at the sky and see your glory, whether it is day or night. Your word comes across the skies to those who will listen. You reveal your revelation truth to those who listen. When we look for your ways you lead us to joy and peace and love and grace.

Your word warns us about trying things in life and helps us to avoid them. It also leads us to the treasure we would not find any other way. We start each day fresh and you don’t hold anything in our past against us. You keep me from a lot of dumb sins and dumb things I shouldn’t do. You let me start each day clean and freshly washed. Thus I tend to mull over your words more and speak them with my mouth, which makes my days more full, complete, and fruitful.

Psalm 20

I believe you keep me from more harm than I will ever be totally aware of. You give me what my heart needs. You plant your desires in me and help me live your ways. Lord, I wish I would make all your wishes and plans and desires come true. You tend to make me live more like a winner than anything else in life can.

Psalm 21

Lord, you fill my arms with your gifts and blessings. You give me a good life and a longer life as a bonus. God, you smile on us who love you, which makes us love you even more. Everything you do is so brilliant. It’s said that you wipe the slate clean with regard to unwanted things in our lives, but at times I think you throw the slate away. You show your power so vibrantly, Lord, that I don’t know how it is so many miss it. I speak and sing your good news whenever I can, and the New Testament says the gospel is your ‘good news of good things’ (Rom 10:15).

Psalm 22

Father, even with all the good you do for me, some days I feel like I’m miles from you. I feel like you aren’t listening and that you don’t care about me. I hear others saying good things about you but I don’t want to join in. I feel isolated and like others are even laughing at me. We used to live together, but now I feel you moved away. I need to be rescued but you aren’t here to help.

When I go to a worship service I don’t feel like worshipping. I see others rushing to God from all over the place but I don’t feel like joining them. Everyone seems to be worshipping except for me. I know my feelings will change. Help them change quickly. Help them change now.

Psalm 23

Lord, you are my Shepherd, and as Jesus says, you are the good Shepherd. I don’t need a thing when I’m tuned into you in this way. You make me lie down in green meadows and quiet waters are next to me to watch and listen to. This restores my soul. You keep me in your righteousness that is one of your many gifts to me, especially in Jesus (Rom 5:17, II Cor 5:21).

Even when I experience hard times, and even eventually face death, you comfort me because you are right with me each step of the way. You feed me and you give me a drink and revive me with your blessings even in my hard times. Your grace and love follow me around like puppy dogs all day long and you always welcome me into the door of your life.

Psalm 24

God, you have a claim to everything on earth and in your world. You have planned and created everything and all things are yours. You just give us all things to enjoy and to use. God, why don’t you help everyone to see your glory and creation the way I do? Why don’t you help others to know you and experience you the way I do?

Psalm 25

I give you my whole life, Lord. Do with me as you please. The Book of Romans says I should be like a living sacrifice you, so this is how I see myself. As such, you give me your best and you keep the world from getting the best of me. Show me your ways, Lord, and all the ways you work in me. Keep me on your path of truth, God, which I know is your gospel. I’ve been wrong in some ways, Lord, and still, continue to be at times. I know I will die with sin in me, and this is why I need Jesus.

Every road leads to you, Lord, but some are just too self-focused to see it. They don’t know you lead them step-by-step, but they don’t get in step with you. They don’t realize you lead them to prosperity and health, so too often they get side-tracked into something less. The Apostle Paul later describes this as a struggle between flesh and self vs. your Spirit.

Lord, keep me together and on the right road. Cause me to be more of your finished work. In Philippians, it says you begin a good work in us and that you will continue to perform it in us until it is completed. Help me see this working more in me.
