Summary

A family of geese has been visiting a pond annually, this year bringing five goslings after having only two the previous year.

Abstract

For several years, a pair of geese has made a tradition of visiting a pond during late April or early May, staying for a few weeks. Last year, they were observed with two goslings, and this year, the number has increased to five. The geese do not nest by the pond but visit during the day and retreat to a more secluded pond at night. The author has difficulty photographing the geese due to the adults' protective behavior, but they share their observations and joy of the geese's annual visit and the growth of their family in this article.

Opinions

  • The author believes the same pair of geese returns each year.
  • The author is delighted by the arrival of the goslings and the increase in their number.
  • The author finds it challenging to capture photographs of the geese family due to the distance and the geese's defensive reactions.
  • The author is knowledgeable about the geese's behavior and suspects they nest in a nearby field.
  • The author is invested in the geese's well-being, noting the goslings' inability to fly and the protective behavior of the adult geese.

Goslings There Are Five

It Has Become an Annual Event

For quite a few years now, we have had a pair of geese visit each Spring, normally in late April or early May for a few weeks. They never had goslings until last year, when there were 2. Today, we were surprised by 5 goslings!

We’re not sure if the same pair visits each year, but I think they are. They have never nested near our pond, as they just visit during the day, then fly about a quarter mile to a more secluded pond as darkness falls.

But last year was different, as they brought along 2 goslings. Again, when night approached, they disappeared. They must be nesting somewhere in the farm field below the pond. Just day visits.

This year, same thing, except today there appeared 5 goslings along with Ma and Pa. And tonight, sure enough, as night approached, they disappeared into the now about foot high grass of the field. Can’t be too far away, as the goslings can’t yet fly.

It’s hard to get photos since when I get about 30 feet away, the adult geese start to hiss. Difficult to get a photo of the whole gang together. My camera has a zoom, but it is not a professional zoom camera by any means. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the article and photos.
