Google Trends can be a simple, yet surprisingly effective audience-targeting strategy. Using Google Trends is a targeting strategy that works for Medium, or just about any piece of content you create.
But you will also see how to use the Google Keyword Planner tool, combining these two means you have a laser-targeted audience. The kind of audience that is looking for your solution.
And they are both FREE tools!
With this particular article, the (United States) trending keyword search phrase I am targeting is “Google Trends”. As you can see below, the interest over time with “Google Trends” has been pretty constant.
But it started increasing just recently and shows an interest increase during October 2022 in the United States. That is why I decided on “Google Trends” as a primary search phrase.
Your primary search phrase to target is usually a phrase with no more than 1–3 words used together. From there you work on secondary search phrases. “Using Google Trends”, or “Writing With Google Trends” for instance.
So, I decided to write content on how to use Google Trends to write and create content.
I’m doing this for two reasons, to show you how to use Google Trends and the Google Keyword Planner tool. But also to see how well this article performs for the “Google Trends” search phrase.

This is how to target an audience based on GEO location, audience interest, and the best search term to include in your title. Then simply try to use your primary search term as close to the start of your article title as possible.
But we will get to the “how to” part with settings during the course of this demonstration. Along with getting to the log tail and searching phrase bits to narrow down the audience.
Less Is Better With GEO Location And Interest.
The whole 3 step shortcut mentioned with Google Trends is simply deciding on a search term. Then change a few settings to target a specific GEO location and interest over a specific time.
Choosing A Search Term.
Audience GEO Location.
Audience Interest Over Time.
The beauty of targeting an audience this way with Google Trends is that fewer visitors mean a lot more interest. You may end up with fewer visitors, but the audience is much more targeted.
Therefore such an audience might be much more responsive to your content. 1000 Laser-targeted visitors interested in your content are worth more than 1,000,000 clicks with zero response whatsoever!
Google Trends For A Trending Search Phrase.
I chose to use “writing” on purpose for this demonstration to follow with Google Trends. It is a rather broad topic, contained in a single word. Because there are so many topics and subjects surrounding the term “writing”.
But you will later see how to connect the longer (long tail keywords) search phrases with this strategy, using the Google Keyword Planner.
Just a few simple settings and selections inside Google Trends, and you’re set. In the top right-hand side corner, you will see a little downward arrow.
Click on that and a drop-down window will appear, as seen below. This is where you select the country you wish to target. In my case, I prefer targeting top-tier countries.

Targeting top-tier countries means you have a better chance of selling high-ticket affiliate products. Because the more expensive digital products may be more affordable to these audiences. Top Tier countries include.
The United States.
The United Kingdom.
Canada.
Australia.
The Netherlands.
New Zealand.
Germany.
France.
Ireland.
Simply select from the drop-down the GEO location of your ideal audience based on your topic or niche. Next, you decide on the primary search keyword or term and enter that in the search.

Once the GEO location is set, you will have other options. Like the time span, you wish to analyze or even the categories. There are several categories for any Google Trends search term.
For this demonstration, however, I just left the categories at “All Categories”. You can set the time span for interest over time search results as much as 5 years.
Furthermore, you will have results by sub-regions. Just as an example, sub-regions for instance work well when you use classified ads.
Because most of your top classified ads sites may ask for a postal code from where you are sending your classified ad.
See where this is going? Yes, with the classified ad you can target a specific region within your primary GEO selection. In this case, Virginia seems to be the spot for this specific interest.

Find A Trending Search Term Based On The Topic.
Find a trending search phrase or keyword based on your topic or niche when using Google Trends. For demonstration purposes, we chose “writing”, and we will now move on to the Google Keyword Planner tool.
Our topic is writing, and we want to look for high-volume, low to medium-competition search phrases. For this, you will need the Google Keyword Planner. This is a free tool you get to use inside your Google Ads account.
If you do not have one, then simply create a free Google Ads account. But you will need the Google Keyword Planner tool to use along with Google Trends.
As illustrated above. I used 3 different search phrases based on the primary search interest with Google Trends. These all have to do with writing, just in different ways.
Writing From Home.
Writing Jobs At Home.
How To Make Money Writing.
All 3 of these search phrases have a monthly search volume of 1K — 10K each. They also have a low to medium competition level, meaning they may turn out to be rather attractive and, therefore also rather profitable.
Now, if you create an article on ‘Writing”, then you include the search phrases researched with the Google Keyword Planner tool.
These are the keywords and search phrases you want to use in titles, article bodies, and presentations.
Writing, writing from home, writing jobs at home, and how to make money writing. These are the words and phrases best to populate your content with.
A simple but rather effective content and audience targeting strategy that can work like a charm. But these are just the basics of the research. Creating all the content is an entire topic on its own.
