In a startling turn of events, Google, the tech giant known for innovation and growth, sent a company-wide email on January 17th, delivering an unexpected layoff warning to all its employees.

This came as a surprise following the recent 1000+ layoffs, raising concerns and leaving Googlers in anticipation of what lies ahead.

The 3:00 AM Email: Google’s Last Layoff

Exactly one year ago, on January 20th, 2023, Google experienced a sudden layoff that sent shockwaves through the company.

An email delivered at 3:00 AM informed over 12,000 employees that their time with the company had come to an abrupt end.

  2. Extended Severance: Those impacted received 16 weeks of severance, along with an additional 2 weeks for each year of service to Google. This, combined with the notification period, resulted in a generous 172 days, approximately six months of paid leave.
  3. Leftover Benefits: Google committed to paying out all remaining vacation time and yearly 15% target bonuses, demonstrating a significant effort to support the released employees.

The 3:00 PM Email: Sundar Pichai’s Ominous Announcement

Fast forward to January 17th, 2024, at 3:00 PM, when Googlers received another company-wide email, this time from Sundar Pichai.
