Goodbye For This Year

A poem written in September but only shared now

Personal Photo — taken in September of 2023

I think the hummingbirds have gone away It’s been over three days since I’ve seen them sway On the red base of their feeder on our porch Glowing like God’s embers on a spent torch

My heart’s not ready to say my goodbyes And so I sit here filled sadly with sighs as moisture unbidden fills my eyes

Wait, what was that on the feeder, swaying In the light and cool breeze?

Could it be? Yes it is! A blessed hummer sipping sugar water Just as he or she ought’r!

But that hummer was the last one I’ve seen For flowers are mostly gone And the grasses are no longer green This morning I took down the feeder until next year Then, God willing, they will be, once again, back here!

Thank you for reading this little poem.

May your life be filled with the joys of God’s beautiful creation!

Sadly, they’re probably won’t be a next time for me at our cabin now that my dear husband, Rafe, has gone to his eternal home.

I am now back in my hometown in Arizona. I hope to visit the area where we live together. I have friends there now, but the winters are too cold for my desert rat blood.
