Summary

The article contrasts the difference between being "good" and "great" in the context of a college point guard's performance, emphasizing that greatness is achieved through a series of small, dedicated improvements beyond mere fundamentals.

Abstract

The text distinguishes between a good college point guard, who consistently leads his team to the Sweet Sixteen but no further, and a great one, who not only reaches the championship game but also achieves an undefeated record and wins four consecutive championships. It suggests that the transition from good to great is not due to a single significant factor but rather a compilation of incremental enhancements. The great point guard is portrayed as someone who commits to off-season skill improvement, studies his teammates' gameplay to capitalize on their strengths, and fosters mutual trust, which elevates the team's overall performance. The article posits that perfection is subjective and that constant elevation through dedicated practice is key to moving from good to great. It underscores the importance of respecting the process of growth and the personal responsibility in striving for greatness.

Good-vs-Great

Two Different Planes Of Existence

Good means a college point guard leading his team to the sweet sixteen four-years in a row, but no further each year. Great means a point guard leading his team to the championship game, four-years in a row, undefeated each year, and winning four consecutive championships.

What is it that makes one good and another great? It’s not one big thing, but a series of small things that equate to something big. In the case of the two college point guards, they both knew the fundamentals of the game, but fundamentals won’t result in greatness.

One relied on what he knew, while the other took what he knew, to a whole other level. The latter of the two was committed in the off-season to improve on his skills, as well as to studying tape involving his teammates. He observed their strengths and weaknesses, catering to the former, which in turn slowly dissipated the latter. This fact made said teammates better, because his trust in them, enhanced their confidence in themselves.

Good is great, but Great could never be good.”

Good is what we hope others will regard us as at the beginning of our journey, it’s meant to bring attention to us. We go from good to great by improving on what it is we’re doing. We decide we’re not going to settle for anything less than the very best.

Perfect practice makes perfect. We must be diligent with our practice if we expect to be perfect, with our performance. Perfection to me is anything we feel comfortable sharing or accepting, in other words, it’s a personal preference. Not saying that it’s perfect, but that it’s efficient for us. The more we do a thing, the better we become at doing said thing. Good turns into great based on our commitment to consistency, it’s all about constant elevation. We can’t expect to improve doing the same thing. We have to enhance our understanding if we intend on bettering our skills.

There’s always a better way to do everything, some of us search for it, while others don’t. Our desire and work ethic will determine if we’ll be left labeled as good or great. No one can give us either, we earn whatever we’ll receive. So, we should put it in our minds that we’ll move through the process accordingly, and we’ll go from one stage to the other properly. We have to be good before we can become great because great, could never come before good. When we respect the process, the process will most definitely respect us.

Thank you for reading my words.

May all we deserve and desire flow abundantly into our lives like a river into a sea.
