Golden Nugget’s Spiked Patina Sapping a Genuine Shooting Star
Jagged Chunk of Dirt

Originally, it had begun like a pebble; a smooth rounded pebble. So smooth and rounded it was originally named golden nugget. This wonderful tidbit was cherished and loved by two hard-working class workers.
One day along its rolling path, golden nugget bumped onto a genuine shooting star. Being used to be the only shining object it was mesmerized by this shooting star.
The shooting star was named Luz. Convinced they were meant to be together, golden nugget seduced Luz. Golden nugget was madly infatuated by Luz and would do whatever it takes to win over Luz.
Luz was simply an angel and fell for golden nugget’s rugged patina. Golden nugget was weathering inside and Luz never saw its alteration and was blinded by its exterior luminous sparkle. Luz was not aware golden nugget’s gloss was slowly being altered by darkening forces.
Golden nugget was so captivated by Luz that he did not realize himself either its inner sombre transformation. For a while they were ecstatic.
With time, darkening forces swayed golden nugget like a rolling stone. Its smooth and rounded edges became angular, rough, and hard. Its fresh and innocent patina was slowly weathered, altered, and metamorphosed. Golden nugget was slowly undergoing non-visible bleaching secretly losing its shine.
One day, Luz realized the golden nugget was completely transformed and could not understand what had caused these major interior changes.
Luz’s angelic character would try to make golden nugget go back to its luxurious sparkle but unfortunately, it was too late. The damage was done.
Golden nugget had now become a jagged chunk of dirt. Jagged chunk of dirt had an exterior patina that was now rough and sharp. It had protruding and spiky edges that would literally gash, indent, and break everything around him without pity.
Jagged chunk of dirt sapped all of Luz’s light leaving her as an empty rock.

‘Jagged chunk of dirt’ initial version was among one of my first piece of writing when my nephew encouraged me to write in early December of 2017. I was going through hard times dealing with losing my 28 year old soulmate, and my dad at the hospital for an entire month between life and death.
When I reread it this week, I got goosebumps with Golden nugget’s spiked patina literally gashing, indenting, and braking everything around him without pity…
