Golden Barrel Cactus — Never In a Hurry

October Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Site or Sight”

Mother-in-law’s cushion; don't sit!

I was going to say,

Amazing food source for desert pollinators

but decided it didn't quite sound like me!

The first time I came across this beautiful cactus aka Echinocactus grusonii was in Shimla, India. I remember laughing at the little signboard that said mother-in-law’s cushion.

Then, last week, when I visited the UCR Botanical Gardens in Riverside, CA, I was dazzled by the sight of this rare cactus, the golden barrel — designated as an endangered species.

I was stunned to discover that its lifespan can be 100 years. It grows to about three feet in height and two feet wide. It takes about 50 years to mature. When it matures, it blooms — the yellow/orange blossoms show up in spring — like a crowning glory, and then turn to fruit. Slow much?

The barrel cactus is an amazing source of food for desert pollinators. It can also regenerate itself. The new ones are called pups (right?!), and they grow in little clusters.

The cactus itself is structured to protect itself from predators. I would not venture into that spiny, spiky overlap! Cute, yes. Menacing? Also yes!

Fun fact — nearly 30 species of barrel cacti exist!

Also, in Mexico, candy is traditionally made from the internal pulp of these cacti.

Thank you, Mary Chang Story Writer 💕you rock!
