Going Into My 2023 Travel Plans Without Expectations

I have an idea of what I want to see but no idea where life will lead me this year

I used to love making new years resolutions and getting excited for the year to come. However, the older I got, the more I started to adopt goals as and when necessary and come the new year, I had often just started a new challenge or goal.

It was the same in 2022. I decided I needed to change something in September and started working remotely while studying French in Montpellier, France. I then went on to quit my job and impulsively applied for the Canadian IEC visa, which allows me to work and travel in the country for up to a year. I followed this through and set working in a Canadian ski resort as the goal for this winter season. As of right now, I have made it to Canada and am actively applying for jobs.

So, my goal didn’t start with 2023, though it will likely define a huge chunk of the year.

Canada has been on my travel bucket list for many, many years. Probably at least the last 7. To have finally made it this far has been incredible and I am now almost hitting one month of being abroad. It’s been the best experience I have had in years. I was so afraid going would be a mistake, that the life experiences I have had so far have been just so gratifying. I’ve also already met some of my favourite people probably ever.

I have had a few culture shocks and laughed when I came across Aarti Tailor’s post on them, as I could easily identify with the majority of her experiences. The fact that plaster is not a word here still baffles me.

In the lead-up to going to Canada, I tried to prepare as much as possible. I knew I would likely be away for up to a year and wanted to feel at least a little prepared. I loved Jillian Amatt’s article on growing up in Canada and just how different it is from Europe. I felt it gave me some insights into the differences I can expect going to Canada, culturally and socially.

As for my 2023 travel plans, I am genuinely approaching them with no expectations. I have already reached one of my major bucket list places in December 2022 and am excited to explore every corner of it.

That being said, there are a few places I am tentatively looking at visiting:

Boston and New York

I recently stayed in an amazing hostel where I met people from all over the world and someone invited me to come to visit Boston, which I’d love to do. I also have a friend near New York who I’d love to visit this year. Canada is a lot closer to all the US than Europe so I am planning to make the most of it.

South America

One of the two continents I haven’t visited yet and I would love to go in 2023. I have a feeling I will meet lots more adventure-hungry travellers here in Canada so maybe this will be on the cards.

This one is very tentative, but my thinking is this — if I fly back to Europe from Canada, I may as well go via Asia. You can laugh at me, I would totally understand. Honestly, once the travel bug bites, there is no stopping and I will find ANY reason to continue to travel.

Thank you to Globetrotters for the amazing prompt!
