God is in the Business of Changing Hearts

And He will use your obedience!

College was the best mission field ever.

I wasn’t attached to anyone — free to minister at any time of day.

I was two years old in the Lord when I enrolled in a four-year SUNY college in upstate New York. My heart was on fire for the Lord, and I wanted to share Him with as many people as the Lord led.

One day, while shuffling through the student center, tables set up against the walls caught my eye.

It was Community Business Awareness Day. As I glanced around, I noticed a table for Planned Parenthood.

My eyes froze, and I sensed the Lord saying I should walk over there and talk to the young woman attending the table.

What was I supposed to say?! I was opposed to how they performed abortions. Could I speak with her without getting rattled?

But as I took the first step toward the table, I sensed God saying He wanted me to just ask questions.

So I did.

And after a few minutes, I asked her a question about abortion. I said, “Because I’m a born-again Christian, I have a different view. Could you please explain?”

This girl’s jaw dropped and hit the floor! She said she couldn’t believe she just had a civilized conversation with a born-again Christian!

That taught me that there’s a way to diffuse the biases and stereotypes for all people. Asking questions and listening to the answers is one of the least threatening ways to approach someone you disagree with — and it’s easy to do!

First, pray — ask God if this is what He wants you to do — sometimes the answer is no! You’ll know this if you don’t have peace.

Second, tap into God’s heart for this person. Someone who doesn’t know Jesus needs your compassion.

Third, walk in love and humility, knowing you needed someone to come alongside you once as well.

No matter the outcome, praise God that He used you to plant a seed. If the person becomes irate, it’s ok. That’s just God working in their hearts.

Maintain your peace. Know who you are. Afterward, pray that God will send someone to water the seed and so on.

This is God’s gig!

Last, God met me at the point of obedience to His direction — the step forward! We often get our instructions on the way to our destination. He wants us to step out in faith.

And remember that it is not your job to change someone’s mind. It is God’s job to change the heart. Theirs AND yours. So let God be God.
