Globetrotters Writers Spotlight — Osan Fernando
Traveling is my other life

Hi Globetrotters! My name is..
Osan Fernando
I came from..
The Philippines. I live somewhere in the National Capital Region of the country. A simple and small city without the glitz and glamour of the famous ones.
I work as..
A Dentist in a private practice. Working 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Longer hours if needed — if my budget for traveling is not enough. I have started to dip my fingers into writing. Little and small steps but hoping someday I can reach my destination.
I love to travel because
Traveling is my other life. A Life in a Different World. Whenever I step into an airport, I feel like I’m already transported into another world.
Traveling is where I run to when I’m burned out. A solace that gives me peace as if saying — plan your trip, I’m just here waiting.
Traveling makes me see, hear, feel what’s on the other side of the world. It completes the missing part of me.
Though upon returning home reality bites, it’s nothing compared to what I have become — a fully recharged, energized human being ready to conquer the world again.
The best place I’ve been to is..
This is hard to say. I have two best places, Manhattan, New York and the Yellowstone National Park.
My Autumn in New York, that’s how I called it. The festivities and memories from Thanksgiving Day to the lighting of the different Christmas trees. Those moments stuck with me for the longest time.
I joined a 7-day tour for the Yellowstone, covering 7 states. It’s a magical place. Breathless, I should say.

In my spare time, I like to..
Read, write, watch videos on YouTube and do household chores in between.
If I will compile all the videos I have watched, it’s like I have traveled all over Japan.
I used to be a mall rat. But the pandemic lessened a rat in the mall.
I like to dream and let my imagination works. I have several journals filled with travel itineraries, complete with what bus to take and subway station to go to. Practically, I have traveled to many places in the company of my journals.
My top travel tip is
Travel Solo. I’m at my bravest when I travel alone. I left all my fears at home.
I can follow my itinerary or be spontaneous without anyone to worry about or anyone annoying me.
I’m a “from sun up till sun down” type of traveler.
If you can’t find a travel buddy with the same mindset as yours, be glad you haven’t. Travel will be limited if you have.
I research everything before I travel. As much as possible , I don’t want to miss out on anything. It may be my only chance to be there.
If I could live somewhere else, I’d live in..
Anywhere where winter or autumn is the only season. I have lived in a tropical country all my life where the whole year is either “I melted like butter” or “got soaked in the rain”. That will be a whole experience.
Or in rural Japan. As I have watched many videos about Japan, I feel like I want to live there.
My favorite way to travel is..
By foot. Until my feet hurt.
By train. I love the feeling of seeing the city beyond the city. The houses, the landscape and the rural areas of the country which I can see as the train passes by like having no end.
By subway. Going to a subway station is like going to another city. It’s the most reliable one to take . Even if I got lost, knowing what station I needed to be in, will solve the problem. I can say, subways in South Korea and Japan are the best.
Three lessons I’ve learned from traveling..
- Traveling even on a tight budget is very possible and fulfilling. Research and research. Some tours can be done by do-it-yourself. Good deals are everywhere. As I took advantage of free admissions, day passes and 50% off on food in supermarkets, there was always an extra cash to buy other things.
- Don’t wait for the right time . Who knows when is the right time to travel. Don’t listen to those who love to oppose your plans. They are not paying for your trip, why do you have to listen to them.
- Don’t go with the flow. Counter flow. I traveled during the off-peak season, with fewer travelers, good hotel deals and cheaper airfares. I went to less traveled places. Same charm but often overlooked.
My number one travel activity..
Walk around the city. And visit museums, Catholic churches and supermarkets. As I hopped from one place to another, I took photos. I always have my cell phone, tablet and camera in my bag.
These kind of memories need to last a lifetime. And my memory cannot guarantee that it can hold onto them forever. Photographs will make memories last and be my healing if I need one.
