Globetrotters Writer Spotlight: Mariana Carvalho

We travel to learn more about the world. And we end up learning more about ourselves.

Hi Globetrotters. My name is Mariana Carvalho. But you can call me Mari.

I love to travel because I love learning about others and other cultures.

My number one travel activity is exploring local cuisine and watching the sunset in a new place.

I come from a small town in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

I have lived in São Paulo (Brasil), Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), New Delhi (India), and Jackson (Mississippi), and I currently live in Boston, MA, in the US.

The best place I’ve been is Rio de Janeiro. Maybe I am just too biased because it is in Brazil, but Rio has its way of having a little of the many things I love in life: food, mountains, beach, and the most beautiful smiles and kindness I have ever encountered in my life.

I work as a Solutions Engineer at Dell Technologies, in Boston, MA, and I run a non-profit in Brazil called Brazilians in Tech.

In my spare time, I like to hike, write, go for walks with my dog, and TRAVEL.

My top travel tip is planning the trip is also part of the trip, so have fun as much as you can while planning!

If I could live somewhere else, I’d live in Singapore. Don’t ask me why. I know one day I will live there.

My favorite way to travel is with a mindset I will meet new people and enrich my life with memorable experiences.

Three lessons I’ve learned from traveling are:

  1. We don't need to go too far away to learn about ourselves
  2. Travel makes us more empathetic with others
  3. Life is too short to be taken too seriously

What are the lessons you have learned from traveling?
