Globetrotters Writer Spotlight — Jamey Melcher

Hi Globetrotters. My name is… Jamey Melcher
I love to travel because… like many of you here, I love to travel because it’s exciting and energizing. It gets me out of my comfortable life and that’s when growth happens! I was bicycle touring in Australia years ago and kept seeing the huge rolling billboard that some bus company (think greyhound but an Aussie version) had plastered on the back of their busses. It said “You never, ever know if you never, ever go!” Cheesy, but so true. And, it pretty succinctly and accurately describes what I love about travel.
My number one travel activity is… Adventure travel is way up on my list. I’ve traveled by bicycle as I mentioned already. I’ve trekked, backpacked, skied, and paddled in many different parts of the world as well as many regions here in the US. That said, I also love exploring a new city on foot, experiencing a cultural event, or lounging on a beautiful beach.
I come from… Maryland, and though I’ve been on the road at times and have lived elsewhere, I have called this my home base for most of my life.
I work as a… high school teacher. Soon to be a retired high school teacher! I have also worked as a raft guide, a radio reporter, a farm hand and several other jobs to help pay the bills and keep the travel funds coming in.
The best place I’ve been is… probably someplace I haven’t seen yet! Of the places I have traveled, I loved Nepal for the adventure and amazing cultural experiences of living with families who act as innkeepers along the trekking trails.
In my spare time, I like to… be active by biking, running, hiking etc. So, when stuck inside, in front of a computer, I often find myself using my time to read travel articles, plan my next trip(s), or write about travel.
My top travel tip is…don’t move too quickly. I know that may sound surprising since I’ve mentioned biking about 5 times already! Take time to just sit with a cup of coffee, or tea, or any local version of this, in whatever town or city you find yourself. Watch the local, daily life go by. This slower pace is how I have met the most interesting people, had the most rewarding conversations, and begun my most memorable adventures in a new location.
If I could live somewhere else, I’d live in…Central America — I think. I am currently in a multi-year process of searching for my next home away from home. I’ve been traveling to or revisiting various spots in Mexico, Costa Rica, and up next — Panama. By immersing myself in the markets, town squares, and neighborhoods of many popular expat locations as well as lesser known towns, I sure am enjoying the process of finding my next, new winter home. Stay tuned for a more definitive answer to this one.
My favorite way to travel is…no surprise here if you’ve read my responses so far. My favorite way to travel is by bicycle because it dictates the slow pace that I’m fond of. Every 50 miles or so, you must stop for food and a place to stay. It keeps me off the more traveled and touristy paths, which can be great and typically provide much needed amenities, but I like finding my own way and bike travel lets me do that really well.
Three lessons I’ve learned from traveling are…Smile. Attempt the language. Be humble. These three actions along with an open approach to meeting people and respecting their culture is a responsibility of those of us who are privileged to experience the world as travelers and guests.
