WRITERS SPOTLIGHT
Globetrotters Writer Spotlight — Hannah (The Writing Housesitter)

Hi Globetrotters!
My name is Hannah Wilkinson. 👋
I love to travel because it reminds us, that our world is a very small place. We are all connected by the same basic human desires and troubles and by observing this, travelling makes you more empathetic, expansive and enlightened!
My number one travel activity is people-watching. Whenever I land in a new place, I head straight to the nearest coffee shop or bar, grab my favourite drink, and sit and soak up my new atmosphere.

I come from a seaside town in North Yorkshire, England. I grew up surrounded by rolling moorlands, farms and rugged coastlines. So, whenever I’m in the countryside of any country — I feel at home.
I work as a… strategist and consultant, but I’m practising making the main thing the main thing so, I’m a writer!!
The best place I’ve been is… Croatia. Full of rich history, incredible architecture, the most beautiful coastline and mountains — it truly has it all. My trip there was extra special because I shared it with my two best friends. As you get older, you’re never sure how many more moments you’ll get like these with your friends before “life” starts to happen and people start to settle down and start families. This trip still makes me feel full of joy and emotion to this day.

In my spare time, I like to… Do lots of yoga, play piano, read, hike, rock climb — I’ve been nicknamed Hobby Hannah because I’ve got a new obsession every week…
My top travel tip is to keep a written daily diary. Photographs are wonderful, but there’s nothing like reading back on old trips and revisiting small moments you hadn’t captured on film or had forgotten about.

If I could live somewhere else, I’d live in Australia. I’ve been here for almost six months’ housesitting and have fallen in love with everything about this beautiful country; its people, landscapes, nature, food, sunshine, and sense of humour — it might just have the perfect formula.
My favourite way to travel is… by train. It allows you to slow down and soak up every inch of your environment. Particularly, the Eurostar from King’s Cross, London, which is such an indulgent and stress-free way to travel. A few glasses of champagne later… et voila! You’re in Paris!

Three lessons I’ve learned from travelling are…
- Plan but be adaptable. Take the stress away by having an itinerary but prepare for the unexpected and allow yourself to go off-piste — the universe always has great stories and experiences ready to surprise you with!
- Local knowledge. Ask your cab driver, Airbnb host, or restaurant server where their favourite places are. They will always have better recommendations than the TripAdvisor search you did months previous.
- Go tech-free. As much as you possibly can… I’ve experienced so much by travelling without headphones in or being glued to my phone. Being aware of your environment and actively looking, smiling and engaging with people (particularly as a solo traveller) will make you feel less of an alien in your new environment.

If you made it this far, thank you! It is so nice to meet you and to be a part of this wonderful community. Please drop a comment below to introduce yourself, I would love to read your work and be inspired by some of your travel stories!
