Gliding Crows
Gull-Wannabes
A crow glides by beautifully A young black gull-wannabe
At first, from afar, I thought it was an osprey. Or a very dark seagull.
Closer up, it’s a crow. Gliding on the wind.
My first reaction: this is a gull-wannabe. Crows don’t glide. Yes, perhaps for a wee bit as they come in for a soft landing, whether on a branch or on the ground — breaking their speed, and settling.
But through the air, for a hundred or two feet? No, never. I’ve never seen a crow do this. Except this guy, from far, far ahead, and closer and closer. Yes, gull at first glance, then osprey, then, then crow. I laughed and praised his skill and gall.
Gull-gall.
Sometime later I read that you can tell a raven from a crow by gliding, by soarig: ravens can glide, can and do soar, catch thermals. Crows can’t and don’t.
Ah, a raven. Should have known.
