Summary

The article recounts the story of a landlord who, after avoiding proper vision correction for 20 years, becomes depressed upon finally obtaining glasses that reveal the true state of his dirty home.

Abstract

The narrative focuses on a landlord who, despite being nearly blind for two decades, never visited an ophthalmologist. Instead, he compensated for his poor vision by purchasing large screens to watch television. After acquiring multiple pairs of incorrect prescription glasses over the years, he finally obtained a proper pair, only to discover the neglected cleanliness of his living space. The revelation of the actual condition of his surroundings led to a newfound depression, as he realized the extent of the mess he had been living in but couldn't see before.

Opinions

  • The landlord's avoidance of professional eye care for 20 years is seen as a significant oversight.
  • His purchase of numerous incorrect glasses pairs suggests a misguided attempt to self-correct his vision issues.
  • The landlord's decision to buy a massive plasma screen instead of seeking proper vision care reflects a prioritization of immediate comfort over long-term solution.
  • The story implies that clear vision, while beneficial, can also lead to unexpected emotional distress when revealing long-ignored issues.
  • The author uses the landlord's experience as a cautionary tale, suggesting that obtaining clear vision through glasses can potentially lead to depression when confronted with previously unseen realities.

Glasses Can Make You Depressed

The true story of my landlord.

My landlord was blind as a bat for 20 years.

He would ignore you on the street, squint at everything around him such that people thought that he was upset, and type with his face to the keyboard.

He had a problem.

However, somehow, through some stupid bullshit, he managed to own about 8 pairs of glasses which are still around his home. None of them were for his prescription. I’m not talking about sunglasses. Real glasses he somehow randomly bought. He couldn’t see anything through any of them.

He had never been to an ophthalmologist.

He had another idea. Instead of going to an ophthalmologist to get a pair of proper glasses, he just bought huge screens — since that was what bothered him most about his ailment, not being able to watch TV.

He bought a 100ft plasma that took up the whole living room and would sit in front of it on a chair — he still couldn’t see from the couches. This is a true story.

He continued to do this for years. During that time, people advised him to get glasses.

He did. He got glasses.

They were light grey and square and he looked like a scientist. He looked quite smart.

He was also depressed now.

For the first time, he said, he could see the state of the sinks and bathrooms around his home. He had thought they were all sparkling clean before when he couldn’t see anything.

Since he came back from the ophthalmologist with new glasses, he has been depressed. He said it would take him weeks to clean all the dirt around his house that he couldn’t see before.

Let this be a warning to you people. Glasses can make you depressed.
