Give Yourself One Digital Detox Day Per Week
The easiest way to increase productivity, connect to yourself, and boost your self-confidence.
With all its benefits, the digital era brought many struggles to our daily lives, most of which are still rarely detected by the individual, and some will have prolonged effects on our mental health, self-awareness, and confidence. Although it would be challenging to get away completely from anything digital for good, we can gift ourselves at least one day per week in which we focus on our inner peace, and detox from social media, news, and any digital communication.
Numerous studies have shown that the digital world brings stress, anxiety, and the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed. It is an addiction, but it is so entangled with our daily routines that we can’t even acknowledge the negatives that it brings to our well-being. A never-ending urge to expose ourselves for validation or to fulfill inner emptiness, doomscrolling, a constant search for the next little dose of dopamine, and unconsciously comparing our lives with others. All of this is destructive to the self and the inner peace. It is an unconscious but devastating way to disconnect from our true selves and bring a persistent feeling of emptiness, loneliness, and lack of clear vision of our purpose in life. This is why we need to be aware of the negatives and force a routine into our lives where we gift ourselves one day without anything digital.
Start with small steps!
Since we are so addicted and dependent on technology, at first it might be difficult to manage an entire day without it, so start with a few hours only. Pick a day in the week when you can afford to spend it without your laptop or phone and force yourself to stay away from them for 3 hours. The next week you can go to 5 and slowly increase the duration until you go for a full day.
In my article “How Much Do We Know About Our Decision-Making Processes” I talk about how much time is needed for a habit to be formed and that the latest research shows that it takes about 66 days, so have that in mind while going through that process of building the digital-free day as part of your free of effort habits.
The Benefits
You will not notice the benefits of the digital detox day immediately, but with consistency and increasing the duration from 3 hours to a full day, you will slowly start to see improvement in your mental health, productivity, and sleep quality.
The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt circadian rhythms, affecting sleep patterns. Disconnecting from screens can contribute to a more restful and rejuvenating sleep. This is something that everybody should do not only once a week, but every day before going to sleep by leaving all screens at least one hour before going to bed. The quality of our sleep is a major factor in our overall well-being.
A digital detox day will also encourage face-to-face interactions, fostering deeper and more meaningful connections with friends and family. It’s an opportunity to prioritize real-world relationships.
However, the thing that will have the biggest impact on the quality of your life is the connection to yourself. Without the constant notifications and the never-ending scrolling, we start to connect with ourselves, our thoughts, and our feelings. Such an inner glance and connection is rarely possible if your mind is lost within the screens, and losing the distractions can help us explore our inner world. A form of meditation, cleansing our minds from the negatives of social media and the digital world, and finding the beauty of our thoughts and imagination.
Taking intentional breaks is crucial for our mental and emotional well-being. A digital detox is not about completely abandoning technology but rather about finding a healthy balance. By incorporating these practical tips into your life, you can have a more mindful and balanced existence, allowing yourself the space to recharge and thrive in the offline world. Remember, it’s not just about the quantity of your online time but the quality of your offline experiences that truly matters.
