Summary

A 9-year-old girl ingeniously helps a blind man understand the concept of the color green through a sensory experience.

Abstract

The narrative revolves around a blind man who is curious about the visual experience of colors, particularly green. His frustration leads him to frequent a park where he encounters a thoughtful young girl. After much contemplation, the girl devises a way to convey the essence of green by guiding him through a tactile experience involving dew-covered grass and the sensation of the breeze, suggesting that colors are feelings to be experienced rather than described. Her profound approach deeply touches the man, providing him with a sense of peace and understanding.

Opinions

  • The story suggests that emotional maturity can transcend age, as evidenced by the young girl's ability to empathize and provide a meaningful experience for the blind man.
  • It implies that sensory experiences can bridge the gap between the sighted and the visually impaired in understanding concepts like colors.
  • The narrative conveys that some experiences, such as the perception of color, are inherently subjective and may be better communicated through indirect, sensory means rather than direct explanation.
  • The girl's solution to the man's query reflects a belief in the power of creativity and empathy to overcome communication barriers.
  • The story emphasizes the value of patience and reflection, as the girl takes time to consider her response to the man's question, and the man waits for her return, trusting in her promise to help him understand.

Once upon a time, there lived a man who was born blind. Ever since childhood, he used to overhear people describing things in colors, this made him extremely curious about how would colors appear.

As he was unable to see anything, his curiosity quickly turned into annoyance.

He would frequently stroll up to a nearby park and sit there in silence for several hours with his dog.

His frustration and curiosity both quickly grew in intensity. While many kids used to play around him, one 9-year-old girl noticed him sitting quietly and reflecting on something.

She could tell he was having trouble because of his sad eyes and melancholy face.

She approached him and asked him “Mister, do you need anything ” to which the old man said, “I just want to know what the color green looks like, I know I am blind so I cannot see but I can perceive differently if someone was able to make me feel what the color green feels like, I would be grateful.”

The girl was perplexed as to how one could describe a color to another. She had no response, so she quietly left him.

She did not return to the park for the next 10 days, which made the blind man feel even more hopeless and lonely than before.

After 10 days, the girl approached him with an answer. She asked the blind man to come to the park at 5 a.m., and she also asked him to listen to everything she said after promising to give him something.

As per the instructions given by the girl, the man arrived at the park at 5 a.m., sitting on the same bench where he usually sat. The girl approached him and asked him to take off his shoes; the man was hesitant but remembered that the girl had asked him not to ask any questions. He took off his shoes, and as he did so, the girl grabbed his hand and led him to the grass.

As he touched the dew-covered morning grass, the man suddenly smiled.

He was asked to do so by her. When she asked him to turn around and feel the breeze around him, his smile brightened. She stated that even though this breeze is colorless if it were, it would be GREEN.

She told him that colors are beautiful, so beautiful that there are no words to describe them in the same way that their appearance does. Colors, she claims, are meant to be felt rather than expressed. This touched the man’s heart, and he finally received answers to all of his queries, confusions, and questions. He thanked the little girl for bringing him peace as they both smiled their way back to their homes.
