The Hopefulness of Christmas Trees

Giant trees, tiny trees — what’s it all about?
They say the bigger your children, the smaller your Christmas tree. Over the years, my trees have gone from almost the size of this year’s Union Square big guy (above) to this year’s tabletop mini in my living room (below.)

Whatever your tree — the Christian references to immortality, the secular symbol of holiday joy, I think it’s not about the size. It’s about the season.
Holiday trees wrap us together.
Watching small children as tree lights blink on, seeing couples (and sometimes perfect strangers) reach for a hand to hold when music drifts around the pine-scented scene, plucking an envelope from the Giving Tree to insert a card and make someone else’s season brighter . . .
Tiny trees, giant hopes for a better future. God bless us every one.
