Getting The $50 Bonus for June

How much did you earn to get the June bonus?

UPDATE: 7 JULY 2021

I just checked my MPP Dashboard and for earning $66 USD for June 2021, I received the $50 bonus. I wrote the article below in haste, apologies for that, but I sincerely believed that the MPP would show bonuses one or two days after the end of the applicable month! Thanks to everyone who has given their earnings data and helped us all understand this Bonus Scheme, while it is in place!

Previously I wrote that I received the $50 bonus for my earnings in May 2021.

I had 29 stories published in the month of June 2021, a big record for me!

My MPP earnings were $66 USD “under my own steam” but I did not receive the Tier 3 Bonus.

Does this mean that one needs $71 to get into the $50 Bonus Tier, as I earned $71 for May and did receive the $50 bonus for Tier 3 for my May earnings!

Who knows? Maybe someone on Medium earned $67 to $70 USD for June 2021 and got the $50 bonus. 😆

Curiously, in April 2021, I decided (without knowing about the Bonus scheme) to step up the rate of my published stories. I aimed to have 5 to 7 stories published per week, to see if that impacted my earnings!

Even with 29 stories in total published (averaging around 7 per week) my earnings for JUNE didn’t match what I earned (under my own steam) for May, which was $71 USD.

Before my experiment in April began, the number of stories that I published each month ranged between 5 and 10, and my earnings over the first 3 months of 2021 averaged $50 USD. I am quite happy with this!

Then with a little more application, i.e. increasing my writing output and having more than 10 stories per month published, this did increase my monthly earnings. I think that due to my publishing more stories in April, my earnings rose to $61 USD for that month.

For May 2021 I published 15 stories and that’s the month when my earnings, under my own steam, hit $71. That put me into the 3rd and bottom tier of the Bonus scheme, to my surprise.

The articles that I write, that keep earning over time, are those about Medium.

Please note that ’m not jumping on the band-wagon to get reads by writing this article that you’re reading now. I am writing this because I said in my previous article about the $50 bonus, that I would give an update about whether I received it for June or not!

Also, I love technical writing and sharing my insights about working with Medium. If you feel upset over particular content or over the amount of certain types of content on Medium (or anywhere else), just don’t read that content.

You can dismiss (remove) stories from your homepage news-feed, or “mute” an author from your homepage (not the same as Blocking, but just stopping stories from that author/writer appearing on your homepage).

Regarding the April to July bonus scheme, personally I think that it is divisive. The majority of writers (estimated at around 90%) will get no monetary reimbursement or incentive at all. And the $500 bonus amount for the top earners is too much, in my honest opinion.

Also, with the Bonus Scheme driving up competition, it could be harder for the more modest earners to get into the bracket for the lowest tier of the current Bonus scheme. Who knows?

What about the Bonus Programme’s dis-incentive for the 9 out of 10 writers, because not everyone can earn $71 USD or more, even with doing their best! Plus the amount of earnings needed to get into Tier 3, the bottom tier, may even change over the months of the programme, with more writers earning more. So the $71 I earned for May may not apply to getting the $50 bonus for June.

Perhaps one had to earn at least $75 USD for June to get into Tier 3, because those in the top 2,000 will change from month to month, depending upon who is increasing their earnings and who is already a “top earner.”

Let’s see what happens in August, given Medium sent out an email to those who subscribe to “writers’ updates” (see your Medium settings, if you didn’t get such an email) saying that this monetary bonus will be applied up to and including July, then replaced with some other programme. My hope is that Medium will promote the lesser earning writers, who are just as valuable as the highest earners.

Yes, I understand that the high earners on Medium do a lot of hard work and put a lot of time into being the high earners, but that is their choice and they are able to do that. Hopefully they will be happy enough with their earnings without the monetary bonus, to continue writing on Medium.

It’s great that Medium wants to reward those who bring in revenue for them; but the faithful writers who chip away, doing their best, to bring in, say $40 to $100 a month are assets too!

I worked hard to publish 29 stories in June 2021.

If you got the $50 bonus for June, please comment your earnings for June 2021.

Many thanks, Celine 💛
