Getting Lost In Time

A poem about getting lost in time

Photo by Aron Visuals on Unsplash

I get lost five years from today I know ’cause I came back in time Five years from now, when I become sixty A bout of Alzheimer’s will frazzle my mind

The wandering and wondering will last for a year With slobbering and mindtrips a plenty But then out of nowhere, when sanity reappears My brain doesn’t just function, it’s anti-dementi

I developed a contraption, it was brilliant in fact A time machine worthy of George Orson Welles It had buttons and knobs and technology crap I feed it with garbage, yes, I know that it smells

First stopping to visit me at 14 years old I decided to come back and warn my young self I told him don’t worry of things that don’t matter Masturbation is fine, it’s good for your health

Kiss that girl Wendy, and don’t be too shy High School won’t matter at twenty Make sure to have fun while you study and try To keep up your grades, you’re extraordinary!

(I cried when I wrote that last line to myself I guess I still need to hear that today No matter how old one can always boost oneself With words that lift you and your friends on their way)

I purchased some stock then, in Walgreens and Walmart Time-warped to the present, I’m a millionaire! I told me “keep writing, even though you’re not that good, By the time that you’re sixty, you won’t even care!”

I gave myself garbage to fill up the tank I zoomed away on that contraption I learned much of myself, and increased my bank worth Returning in time gave me much satisfaction

If ever you wonder about travel in time Just respond to a prompt and you’ll see Writing can tap into creativity Travel in time can be done comfortably

Response to a Prompt

I was asked by a friend to respond to one of the following prompts. I decided to respond to all four in the same poem:

  1. Write about a time you were lost.
  2. Write a poem to your 14-year old self.
  3. Five years from now, I will be…
  4. If you could travel back in time, where would you go?
