Getting Inspiration from Famous Authors

Quotes that have inspired me in my writing journey

I love to write. I have been writing since I was a little kid. Starting with my journal. Then when I began writing my first book as a student in high school. I didn’t get that book published until years later — of course, after many revisions!

I believe my love for writing started because I loved to read as a child and then that love for reading continued. I enjoyed the Nancy Drew series and that sparked my love for mysteries.

I’m currently working on edits for fourth novel. It’s a murder mystery set in a fictional town on the real island of Martha’s Vineyard. My family vacationed their several times when I was a child and then a teenager. I have a strong connection to the island and wanted to share that through the setting in my next book.

Quotes from some of my favorite famous authors

“You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.” — C.S. Lewis

I love this quote because I relate to the sentiments behind it. I’m a tea drinker and I love to read. Just add a blanket and I’m all set to get cozy with a great book.

Reading is an important part of personal growth if you can absorb educational content that you read in non-fiction books. As a fiction writer, I love to read fiction books because it’s an escape from the real world. It’s also a chance to read both good and bad writing and learn how to improve my craft.

“It’s a job that’s never started that takes the longest to finish.” — J.R.R. Tolkien

This quote resonates with me because I admit that I’m a big procrastinator. However, I know that if I never begin, I’ll never finish.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” — Helen Keller

I’m a firm believer that when one door closes, another opens. However, the message in this quote is true. We can get so distracted by the door which closed — which we desperately wanted to open — that we’re not ready or willing to see the new door that has opened.

“In order to write the book you want to write, in the end you have to become the person you need to become to write that book.” — Junot Diaz

I agree with this statement. When I wrote my first novel, I completed the draft while I was in high school. It wasn’t published until ten years later after several rewrites and comprehensive editing input from excellent editors.

However, my personal growth and development during this writing period was immense. I couldn’t have ended up with the finished product that I did if I got ahead of myself and tried to get it published before it was ready.

“Dance above the surface of the world. Let your thoughts lift you into creativity that is not hampered by opinion.” — Red Haircrow

I love this quote. Sometimes when I allow myself to think too much, I hesitate to get started writing my next article, blog post, chapter, or poem. That’s because I’m too worried what people will think about what I wrote.

However, I can’t allow that to stop me from writing.

Sometimes, my own opinion about my work can hinder my progress.

I’m too worried about how it sounds that I feel as if I should be editing as I go. I think this is stupid and won’t resonate with people. Then I need to remind myself to write first and edit later.

“Those who write are writers. Those who wait are waiters.” — A. Lee Martinez

This is so true. I can dream about writing another novel, but if I don’t sit down to write, I’m never going to get anywhere. I don’t want to be someone who is constantly waiting for something to happen and not making something happen.

Writing is a journey

It’s about growing as a person.

It’s about continuing to develop your craft.

It’s about writing content that educates and engages readers.
