Too many of us spend our days in sedentary confinement. Glued to our chairs and desks. That has many negative consequences. Including weight gain, muscle loss, and eyestrain, but you already know that. Have those facts helped to get you up and out of the chair? If you are reading this article, probably not.

Instead of explaining why you shouldn’t sit all day, by reading on you will discover some reason TO GET OUT of that chair. And it all starts with your mind.

Your mind gets tired of looking at that computer monitor and the four walls surrounding it all day. It needs to a reset. Steve Jobs took walks when he needed to find answers to difficult problems. Tom Peters suggested getting a new perspective by walking around in his famous book, In Search of Excellence. Getting up and walking around, even to the water cooler, kitchen or restroom, provides a different spatial environment that helps to refresh your mind.

Walking increases your oxygen intake. So, walking will increase your energy and sharpen your mind, too. An additional health benefit is that walking keeps your muscles limber. We are not built to sit in chairs for hours on end. Standing up more and strolling around from time to time keeps your joints loose and our muscles active.

When you sit at your computer or in front of the TV all day long, you are not giving your eyes a chance to rest. They are focused on a stationary light source for hours on end. To give your eyes a break, walk around. While walking, you need to switch your focus from near to far. That strengthens your eyes, the muscles connected to your eyes, and your neurotransmitters.

It is easy to get sucked in and spend all day in the chair, but getting up, breathing deeply and changing your physical space. Even if only for a few moments benefits your mental, emotional and bodily health. Set a timer, take advantage of a change in activities, or find a time when you don’t need to be sitting at the computer, then get up and walk around. You’ll be glad your did.
