Summary

Donald Trump continues to dispute the election results in Georgia, suggesting legal action against state officials and making unfounded claims of voter fraud, while the state's Senate races remain pivotal for control of the U.S. Senate.

Abstract

Former President Donald Trump has been actively contesting the Presidential election results in Georgia, asserting that he won the state despite the official count. He has retweeted claims by attorney Lin Wood, suggesting that Georgia's Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger could face prosecution for not overturning the election results. Trump's accusations come despite two audits confirming Joe Biden's victory in Georgia by a narrow margin. The ongoing political drama in Georgia is further intensified by the upcoming Senate runoff elections, which are crucial for determining the majority in the U.S. Senate. Trump and President Joe Biden have both been campaigning in the state, although it is uncertain whether Trump's influence will benefit or harm the Republican candidates. The situation is marked by Trump's persistent claims of election fraud, which have been widely dismissed by courts and election officials, including those from his own party.

Opinions

  • Trump is described as a "genuinely good man" by Lin Wood, who also suggests that Trump is reluctant to take punitive actions against Republicans.
  • News commentators criticize Trump's claims about the election as baseless and ridiculous.
  • Kemp and Raffensperger, both Republicans, have defended the integrity of Georgia's election and resisted Trump's pressure to overturn the results.
  • There is a perception of Trump's actions as bizarre and his influence over many Republicans as indicative of a strange power dynamic.
  • The support for Trump by over seventy million voters in 2020 and the alignment of 126 Republican members of Congress with his election fraud narrative are seen as unusual and difficult to comprehend.

Trump insists he won in Georgia

Politics under Trump is strange

Donald Trump has been retweeting about the Presidential election results in Georgia. An attorney in Georgia, Lin Wood, had suggested in tweets that Trump would soon prosecute Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for refusing to overturn the election results in their state. Since they are both Republicans, Trump must have thought they would do his bidding. He has been calling them names and bullying both of them after they said the election was fair and that Joe Biden had won in Georgia.

Dylan Stableford, Senior Writer for Yahoo News, wrote about the issue. He reported about what Wood wrote in a tweet and offered other information:

“President Trump @realDonaldTrump is a genuinely good man. He does not really like to fire people. I bet he dislikes putting people in jail, especially ‘Republicans.’ He gave @BrianKempGA & @GaSecofState every chance to get it right. They refused. They will soon be going to jail.”

“The tweet included photos of Kemp and Raffensperger doctored to show them wearing face masks emblazoned with China’s flag.”

“Since the race was called for President-elect Joe Biden, Trump and his allies, including Wood, have made dozens of baseless claims of coordinated voter fraud in Georgia and other states that voted for Biden. Trump and his legal team have lost virtually every single court challenge — numbering more than 50 — and the Electoral College cast votes Monday confirming Biden’s victory.”

“Trump has been particularly obsessed with Georgia, where Biden defeated him by just 12,284 votes, and where Republicans hold the top statewide offices. Two audits, including a full hand recount, confirmed the results.”

Senate races in Georgia are yet to be determined

With the two senate races in Georgia slated for a runoff with early voting already having started, Georgia remains vital in determining the control of the U.S. Senate when January arrives. The two Republican incumbents have formidable Democratic challengers. Trump and Biden have both been campaigning in the state for the candidates on both sides. Whether Trump’s influence helps or hurts the Republican candidates is not known.

Could Trump’s actions become any more bizarre? News commentators continue to criticize Trump for what they call baseless and ridiculous claims he makes about the election. Trump still insists that he won although Georgia’s electoral votes would not change the outcome.

Kemp and Raffensperger have both insisted that Georgia’s election was conducted fairly and honestly. Even though they are Republicans, Trump apparently wants them put in jail for not following his orders. Trump has found that not all Republicans will do everything he asks. They are trying to follow the law. It is ironic that Trump calls himself the “law and order” candidate.

It is quite strange that nearly twenty attorneys generals of states where Trump won joined with the Texas attorney general to try and overturn election results in four states where Trump lost. Another occurrence which is hard to understand is why 126 Republican members of Congress would go along with their notion.

This presidential election just completed has been truly unprecedented and completely unbelievable. How could someone like Trump have been elected in the first place four years ago? It is very strange, but even more strange is the fact that over seventy million people voted for him in 2020. They still support him.

Trump has some weird power over many Republicans who are devoted to him.
