Gently Treading
Free Verse poem
I pretend play — watch my words, sugar-coat them make them easier to swallow or say nothing at all
I learned this game as a child — to be small, so very small to be quiet yes Momma, no Momma try not to upset Momma
I swore I’d never live that way again but here I am — small and quiet gently treading around you
