Contribute to Dialogue & Discourse

We appreciate any interest in contributing to Dialogue & Discourse.
Our publication seeks to curate well-reasoned pieces that employ formal rhetoric and span the topics of politics, economy, world events, science, technology, history, and others visible on our pages. We are more inclined to accept submissions that are empirically centered, comprised of thoughtful analysis rather than personal assertions. We curate pieces from both sides of the political spectrum, as submissions are evaluated independently of their partisan leanings, if any.
Please observe the characteristics of the pieces featured on our homepage. Though we certainly encourage unique perspectives and original content, our publication has many standards that must be upheld for a submission to be published. Aspiring contributors are strongly encouraged to read through Medium’s Curation Guidelines if they have not already, as they closely mirror our submission guidelines, and evaluate whether their piece contains the characteristics that qualify curation.
To submit a piece, complete our brief submission form. Friend or draft links provide us the full range of metrics and options necessary for review.
Given the volume we receive, a reply cannot be guaranteed for every submission. If accepted, you will be added as a contributor and may be notified via a private note. Your status is verified if Dialogue & Discourse appears as an available publication for submission. If after 8 business days no notice is received nor does the previously mentioned option appear, you have the right to assume your piece was unfortunately declined. All are welcome to check their piece’s status by reaching out via email as well. Please ensure that your email address and submission’s link are inputted correctly, as we do not follow up on broken links. Notified contributors do not need to submit forms for future submissions.
Submission Requirements
While all aspiring contributors are strongly encouraged to review Medium’s Curation Guidelines, several key requirements are outlined below. Please consider them carefully.
Dialogue & Discourse welcomes perspectives across the political spectrums; a piece will never be rejected for a disparity between the opinion presented and that of the editor reviewing. Our objective holds particular weight in our current times, where varying degrees of censorship has become accepted across large news organizations and sharing platforms. However, if a subject matter is discussed in a purposefully agitative or offensive manner, we reserve the right to decline a piece for the method in which its opinion is presented.
Each article must be of a minimum “3 minute read”, approximately 650 words, and include a featured image, at least 1000 px in width. Contributors must not underestimate the risk of copyright infringement for images or other incorporated media and ensure proper citation or licensing is provided. The number of images in a piece may not exceed three.
Pieces must be written with a sense of maturity and be without any profanity, spelling, grammatical, or punctual error. We strongly prefer precise, analytical rhetoric over writing comprised more of personal interjections and assertions. All preview titles must be in Title Case and can not be or have any components that are in all caps. Titles must not have a label or phrase that suggests it is part of a greater series.
We encourage our writers to act with a large amount of autonomy. Please consider changing the text style, integrating quotes, or otherwise formatting each article to suit your style and preference, but with reservation. Edits following a piece’s addition to our publication are allowed.
Pieces containing profanity, slurs, and other dictions will be considered in a very narrow lense, where it is the author’s responsibility to convince the editor that he or she is operating in good faith. For example, some historical quotations may be allowed despite certain slurs included.
No piece or contributor is exempt from Medium’s Rules and Terms of Service. Contributors own the rights to the content they post; the risks concerning intellectual property, libel, plagiarism, and other legal disputes are therefore shouldered by the author. Articles may be edited or removed from our publication at any time, though we ask to be notified in the case of removal.
Submission Logistics
All articles must be submitted through Medium, where formats such as PDF or Word Documents will not be reviewed. While drafts are preferred, existing pieces are perfectly fine for submission.
The following tags are strongly encouraged and their inclusion will increase a submission’s chance of acceptance. They are listed in order of the topic pages in our banner, from left to right: [News, America, USA, United States], [News, World, Europe, China, Foreign Policy, History], [Politics], [Economy, Economics, Finance, Business], [Energy, Climate Change, Environment], [Technology, Startup, Tech], [Science, Artificial Intelligence, Space, Computer Science]. Accepted submissions will be distributed to our topic pages by their tags. Other tags are certainly welcome and will aid in the piece’s curation or distribution.
Our home and topic pages begin with a block of featured pieces. These arrangements are determined by our editorial staff and are based primarily on a piece’s quality, formality, and popularity.
Dialogue & Discourse will never perform textual edits on submissions. Our editorial team may however perform minor formatting adjustments to otherwise acceptable submissions, such as capitalizing the preview title. Any major requested adjustments will be communicated explicitly and the contributor will decide whether to include the adjustments. Do not resubmit previously rejected pieces unless appropriate revisions have been performed.
A few logistics that will be helpful to those who have not previously worked with publications or are perhaps new to Medium altogether.
