TRAVEL AND ENERGY IN A TINY HOME

Gas Prices Are Too High and We Have to Stay Where We Are

We were going to go to Ohio and try to save money and we still will eventually but our plans are held up by gas prices

False start to leave the area, again…

We really were getting ready to leave. We got the rack on with the generator attached to it on the back of our truck as we wanted. We have also since installed the new fuel pump that we needed. We will also install the O2 sensor that we bought a while back but we need to get back to storage and replace the manifold.

And it’s because of high gas prices

Currently, we would have to use gas for both power and getting to our various destinations if we drove on current gas prices. In Pennsylvania alone, the price for a gallon of gas is now $5.063 with the national average at $5.014 as of June 15.

Our logic initially is that Ohio would be a relief from the high prices and they were for a while but now Ohio’s prices are $5.037, higher than the national average and only a couple of cents lower than Pennsylvania. At the gas station near us right now, we already have to pay $5.019 a gallon with the peak reaching $5.119 about four days ago.

Gas prices are insanely high. We’re barely making it even just parking as we have had to run our generator constantly for the last couple of days as the temperatures soared in the area and there was a heat advisory today in Erie County.

No long-distance travel while the prices are skyrocketing

If we had to add hundreds to thousands of miles to that now, we would be paying an exorbitant amount to just gas from our budget every month. Our alternate plan at this point is to find a cheaper campground that we can plug into for a month so that we can give our wallets and our new generator a break.

We have been running solely off of the gas and generator power since we got it in late April. Being plugged in at a plug-in site will save us money on gas for energy costs. This might be the point we reconsider our urgency for solar power again.

Solar energy could solve part of our problem again

We did find a guy who is selling commercial solar panels for $453 for 2,000 watts of solar energy. That is more than three times the amount of energy that we had stolen from us when we lost our last solar panels. This would also be at a fraction of the cost that we had previously paid.

We knew that we would have to generate more energy this summer because of the potential for a hot summer needing as much air conditioning as we could get. This month alone, we’ve had to spend over $400 in gas just to keep our truck and our home powered.

We are comfortable for at least one month just staying in the area if we can find a suitable campground to park our truck at so that we can save the money we’d be spending on all that gas we’ve had to buy. I was really looking forward to getting on the road again and getting as far away from the area as possible but I know that it will still require a few more steps as we also have our items still in storage as well.

Traveling to Chicago in a reasonable time and also finding a spot in the meantime

Travel-wise, I want to stay within a certain area once we do leave until we make it to our goal of getting over to Chicago before the end of summer or at least the beginning of fall. Energy-wise, I know we really can’t cut back our usage but being plugged in will help us in the wallet for sure.

We would also prefer to find a place that doesn’t meter the usage but even then we would still be under what we’ve been paying. Well, these two tiny home dwellers are going to be looking in the next week or so before I get paid for a suitable spot.

If anyone knows a spot in the area, feel free to leave it in the comments which campground we could pay for and plug into. Stay tuned for more from the Erie tiny home couple. We’ve got more stories about traveling, past, present, and future. We’ve also got plenty of energy stories.
