Gamify Your Finances

Turn your money life into a game.

I like to win! Photo by Dave Photoz on Unsplash

I like playing games.

Monopoly, Life, Risk, Texas Hold’em, Scrabble.

Games are fun, challenging, exciting, and interesting.

What if you could turn your money goals into a game as well?

No more being annoyed with budgeting, investing, and telling yourself “no” to every purchase.

Instead, have fun chasing your dreams. (Otherwise, what’s the point!)

Gamify every step of your finances.

Need to save or invest a certain amount of money a month?

Create an exciting reward for socking away the money.

Need to make your budget work but struggle to hit your targets?

Reward yourself for meeting or coming in under your budget.

Maybe you need to compete against others to bring out your competitive nature…look up the average (by age) debt, income, and net worth. Now go beat them!

My wife and I have several money games that we like to play on any given month.

Create a mini-challenge. (My favorite!)

A no-spend weekday week. Or a 1% increase in savings every month for a year. Or even purge your house and see how much money you can get for the items (reward yourself with a dinner and put the rest toward your goals.

Our current mini-challenge is to challenge our current budget for “general expenses” and see if we can come under budget each month. And when we come in under, the excess money goes into a Piggy (see next game).

Piggy Dippin’.

We need to reach a certain number for Coast FIRE by 45, so we gamified it. With piggies.

Piggy bank visuals, reminders, and accountability with each other have helped us make (and keep making) progress.

Each Piggy equates to $10,000 (with $500 increments). As we add, find, create, and earn additional money, we highlight the section of the piggy. And when they’re full we put them up on the wall.

(There also might be piggy sounds and music to keep us excited. LOL)

What type of games do you enjoy?

Do you like to compete with yourself or others?

Is there a financial goal or step that you’ve been struggling with?

Put all those together and create a new money game — and get creative!

Help get the creativity going by sharing your financial games in the comments!
