Game, Set & Match: Life’s like that

It’s on again! The much loved and unique tennis tournament, the Hopman Cup, is on now, in Perth, Western Australia. I enjoyed the commentary with the televised singles’ matches on New Year’s Day 2019, between the great Roger Federer and the great Frances Tiafore, and between the super Belinda Bencic and the super Serena Williams.
Imagine (especially if you are a tennis player) if when someone stuffed something up, you said:
That’s unFederesque !
What the ??
This is one of the proclamations made by the Channel 9 sports commentator. The commentators pointed out that Roger was not playing on par or equal to his best. They pointed out that 5 years ago, the Fed Express, as Federer is aptly nick-named, wouldn’t be so “un-rogerlike.”
“If he was a normal player, you could say his capability could be questioned” pontificated one of the television Commentators.
The “Fed Express” is of course, a tennis God, or the best, not normal- well not at tennis! Other than that, I think that he is a pretty normal human being.
Tennis is a hard sport to learn and to play and to win at consistently.
Besides an elegant and skillful sport to watch, and elegant or interesting and skillful players to admire, and perhaps to try to emulate, tennis has shown me that Life is a bit like tennis, if we can go by the Commentary tonight. Life can be:
- Competitive
- Intense
- Not as free-flowing as of old
- Not always using your best
- Not vintage quality but rusty
- With limited chances
- Meaningful
The “piece de resistance” of the 1st January 2019 matches was touted to be the clash of Serena and Roger in the mixed doubles, the USA versus Switzerland. This has been a huge draw-card and is likely the first and last time that Serena Williams and Roger Federer will be paired in a mixed doubles match. So we can add to our list:
- Unique
- Exciting
- Challenging
- Surprising
So, who won? Well, I’m not telling, in case someone reading this doesn’t want to know (but if they ever do want to know, they can easily find out by googling it). Oh yes, Life can also be:
- Sharing and non-competitive
- Relaxing
- Free flowing
- Priceless
- and with boundless opportunities
Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent or between two teams of two players each.

Life is a bit like tennis. We can play as individuals or as teams, and yes, sometimes we make quite a racket. At work we play games in sets or groups, and how some sets or groups are played, or are favorably looked at, win the players the match. Our goals are like balls hit from one to another, because we are all inter-dependent, and want good returns. Sometimes we make a fault or hit out of bounds, but altogether we enjoy and learn and grow from what we do.
