Gale Sayers, The Legendary Iconic Champion
A Dazzling Running Back Legacy and Life’s Summary Poem(1943–2020)

There once lived a man
by the name of Gale Sayers
he played for the Chicago Bears
brilliance upon him laid
about him was much accolade
immortalized in football footage and film
his eternal light will never dim
inducted into the pro Football Hall of Fame
thrilled fans, when he touched the ball, go game
who earned a first-ballot of Hall of Famer
he was at the top and a real true gamer
earned the nickname, “The Kansas Comet”
what a record, his effort and playing did set
a centered figure in the movie, “Brian’s Song”
of friendship and courage, lasted long
for the real life friendship of the film
he received the George S. Halas Award
to the very end of his friend’s life, he stood guard
he was a two-time all American at Kansas
he was talented with style and much panache
the forth pick of the 1965 draft by the Chicago Bears
his loss and legacy at many heartstrings tears
while playing he ran circles around everybody, all noted
a league record, 22 touchdowns the sports world doted
offensive rookie of the year honors, he did earned
first the right knee, then the second knee
curtailed his career but not his life, you see
became a stockbroker, sports administrator,
businessman, philanthropist, father and husband too
this great champion, legend, icon, much credit is due
who will never be forgotten and truly missed
RIP, you will be missed, the world insist!
