Future Ideal Living Situation — Day 15

What would I like to do five or ten years down the road?

Dr. Tracy Davis, I’m officially halfway through your 30–day writing challenge. I feel like the self-reflection and personal growth that I’m getting out of your challenge have helped me through a very challenging month. Some prompts have definitely helped me more than others. Today’s prompt is just fun though and I’m definitely here for that as well.

Today’s question, “What would your ideal living situation be in five years?” is one that I’ve written about in a previous story. I’d like to revisit if the answer would be the same. I know that there is a real possibility that we will still be living in our tiny home mobile box truck but if we have found a way to find a different source of income at that point, it’s also possible that we have our own land.

I want to live on a farm. I want to grow my own food and live off of the land. I want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city life I’d grown so accustomed to throughout my life. I wasn’t necessarily on board with this to start but my partner has gotten me more excited about living this way.

I don’t think that the house would need to be too big. I’ve never appreciated houses that are way too big for any sized family. There are enough people out there who either don’t have a home or have a home that isn’t sufficient for their needs so I’d want a house with just enough.

I don’t even care if the house were under 1,000 square feet. I just want something that has a stable roof and foundation and enough room for everything that we need to survive.

I think that if it were left completely up to me though, I’d choose something a little more catered to my tastes. I would also consider a house in a small town on a decent amount of land that is still close to amenities that I’m used to.

I also think that we will end up living in an area of the country where all four seasons occur. I’m not a huge fan of snow but my partner doesn’t care if it’s too cold or not. Some of my top destinations are also in a wintry climate.

I like the Chicago area and if you go out far enough, you’ll eventually find some farmland. I also like the Toronto area although you’d also have to drive quite a way out of the city to get to the compromise. My partner wants to buy land up in Maine and I think that would be fine.

Ideally, with all of this, I would hope that we’d have enough money to have a doctor or a nurse come at least once a month to check on our health. I also want to be able to get to the store easily. I want the drive to be more than ten minutes but no more than thirty so that we’re far enough yet still close to everything.

I think that once we can figure out how to survive and make income a different way than depending on disability for the rest of our lives, then we can achieve this dream and live well. I appreciate that I’ve been able to survive and get some money off of my disability to cover my basic needs. But ideally, I’d like to have more than that because, in the end, it’s not enough to live off of forever.
