Funny Cat Videos Can Wait: How to Stop Wasting Time & Become Your Best Self
We all want to be our best selves, right? The most successful, healthy, happy version of ourselves that we can possibly be.
But with so many distractions and responsibilities competing for our time and attention, it can feel impossible to focus on what really matters.
Let me tell you a little story.
Last week, I spent an entire evening browsing social media and watching funny cat videos online. Did I enjoy myself in the moment? Absolutely.
But when I looked back on how I spent that time, I felt disappointed in myself. I had let the urgent things distract me from the important. Sound familiar?
Procrastinating the big, meaningful tasks in favor of little pleasures is tempting. Our brains love dopamine hits from likes and laughs.
But all the research shows that long-term happiness comes from accomplishing goals, nurturing relationships, learning new skills, and having a sense of meaning and purpose. All of which require investing time in the non-urgent-but-important things.
So how do we overcome our instinct to only focus on what’s right in front of us?
It comes down to prioritization.
As motivational speaker Tony Robbins put it: “It’s not about having time, it’s about making time.” We all get the same 24 hours in a day — the difference comes in how we choose to spend them.
Next time you find yourself mindlessly scrolling or clicking around, stop and ask: Is this bringing me closer to the person I want to become? Am I prioritizing the important stuff?
One effective way to help with this prioritization is the use of the Eisenhower matrix, a time management tool that helps you sort tasks based on their urgency and importance.

It splits your activities into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and not urgent or important. This can be an immensely helpful method to visualize and manage your tasks.
Refocusing your energy towards what fulfills you most takes practice, but it is so worth it. Not only will you be more productive, but you’ll have fewer regrets and more pride in how you spend your precious time.
So what are those important tasks and goals for you? Make a list, maybe even try out the Eisenhower matrix, schedule them in, and start taking steps towards your best self today.
You’ve got this!
