Summary

The text reflects on the personal fulfillment of a duty to perpetuate the human species through the act of procreation, emphasizing the biological and genetic legacy passed on to a male offspring.

Abstract

The author of the poem contemplates their role in the continuation of human life, acknowledging the substantial contribution of bringing a child into the world. This act ensures the transmission of personal and species-wide genetic heritage, leaving a tangible impact on both the physical and cognitive aspects of their offspring. While recognizing the uncertainties of life and the various factors that will influence their child's future, including environmental, social, and technological elements, the speaker takes pride in having secured, to some extent, the survival of the human race. The poem touches on the complex interplay of nature and nurture, acknowledging the potential impact of the child on other species and the broader implications of survival and extinction in the context of evolution.

Opinions

  • The author feels a sense of accomplishment in having fulfilled a biological duty by producing an offspring.
  • There is an acknowledgment of the influence of genetics on the child's development, both visible and invisible.
  • The poem expresses uncertainty about the child's future role in the potential extinction of other species, alluding to the concept of "Survival of the Fittest."
  • The text suggests that the child's lifespan and well-being are subject to numerous external factors, including the environment, societal structures, and scientific progress.
  • The author muses on the broader implications of their actions, considering the child's place in the ongoing narrative of human evolution and survival.

Fulfilling My Duty

Poem about evolution and human beings

In the grand scheme of things,

in the grandest schema,

I have already done my part

as a living being — “not wholly

or in full measure, but very

substantially” (Nehru, 1947):

it is a toddling, talking cub,

and a male at that.

I have produced an offspring:

an heir to my biological traits,

leaving indelible footprints

by chemical on his seen and

unseen grey matter, and

genetic fingerprints on his cells.

Thus, I have, partially,

made sure the human race

continues and doesn’t

go extinct for now.

Whether he will be responsible

for the extinction of any

other species, I know not.

That would depend on the

conflicts and struggles between

species based on the

Survival of the Fittest,

which is an honourable theory.

And whether he will live

till a ripe age depends

on innumerable variables

beyond our control;

chiefly, the environment, diplomacy,

politics, social order, public health,

Act of God or lack thereof, technological

accuracy, scientific advancement,

biomedical research, and so on.

But I digress, I have done my part,

just like that fly on the wall has done its.
