From Tennessee to Alabama
My week in photos — October 29 to November 4, 2023

On Sunday, we were living in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and we went exploring. The first place we visited was the Stones River National Battlefield. Rich and I both love history and nature. Those are our two favorite things.

One of my favorite photos from that visit is of the cannon in the cemetery. It is a powerful symbol of military service and sacrifice, a silent sentinel, a witness to the countless sacrifices made by those who served.
The second place we visited was the Fall Creek Recreation Area in the top photo. It was a chilly, cloudy day, but everything was still beautiful.

And finally, we drove up to Hendersonville and visited the gravesite of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash in the Hendersonville Memory Gardens. Rich won’t admit it, but he enjoys visiting the graves of famous people as much as I do.

On Monday, we drove to Lynchburg, Tennessee to visit the Jack Daniel Distillery, and on the way, we passed this old covered bridge. I asked Rich to stop and back up so I could get a good picture of it. He’s getting pretty good at slamming on the brakes.
After Lynchburg, we drove a little further south to Tims Ford State Park in Winchester. It was still cloudy and chilly, but nature is gorgeous in any weather.

We headed back to the campground so we could get ready to drive further south.

On Tuesday, we left Tennessee and drove two hours south to Guntersville, Alabama. The cotton fields in Alabama are cool to see when the cotton balls are open, and they are ready for harvest. A lot of people use them as decorations.

We got all situated in Guntersville RV Park and spent the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing.

We drove around the area a little bit between Guntersville and Albertville. We like to stay off the highways as much as we can and mosey down the backroads.

I zoomed in on this photo, so it won’t go any larger. These two deer were crossing the road as we drove by.

On Thursday, we drove over to the Little River Canyon and drove the Canyon Rim Parkway Road. This is such a beautiful drive. I don’t think Rich went over 20 miles an hour the entire way.

It was a gorgeous sunny day with temperatures in the 60s.

This area of Alabama has been in a severe drought for four months and the water levels are dangerously low. Most of the waterfalls were completely dry.

We saw smoke in more than one area of the forest and were thankful to see firefighters nearby. It smelled like burning leaves.

These beautiful weeds line the roads down here. I think it is pampas grass.

We are camping near the Tennessee River and Guntersville Lake. I wanted to go for a drive to see if we could find any birds and waterfowl.

We found a ton of seagulls on a roof and several Canada Geese on the shore.

We saw a heron, and Rich backed up for me. I can’t tell if it is a Great Blue Heron or a Gray Heron. It was in the shadows.

And we saw a huge flock of American Coots. They are fun to watch dive down and come back up.

All in all, searching for birds and waterfowl was a success. Thanks for spending the week with me. I will try to do this more often. Am I supposed to just post one photo per day? But I have so many I want to share.
