From Now On, I’m Hitting The Gym In The Morning

Here’s why it’s a much better thing

Photo by bruce mars on Unsplash

At 36, I never thought I’d live to see the day when I’d look forward to getting up in the morning. Me, who would hit the Snooze Button at least three times before getting up and starting my day. Yet here I am, praising morning gym sessions.

I won’t feed you bullshit and say I have more energy in the morning, cause I don’t. I won’t tell you how much it’s changed my life, cause I haven’t been doing morning sessions long enough to see a difference.

I know what you’re thinking. Why the hell would I start singing the praises of morning gym sessions when I’ve only done them for two days. Simple.

More Women Are Working Out In The Morning

If you’re nodding, you understand, and you don’t need to read this article further. Chances are, you’re not the audience I’m looking for in this one. If you’re not nodding, then two things are happening right now:

  1. You don’t understand why it’s such a big deal more women are in the gym in the morning.
  2. My experience hasn’t been yours.

And both of these reasons are okay. If your experience is different, you still get it, but if you don’t understand let me tell you.

It’s Easier To Ask For Help

Gym women get it. We’re there for various reasons, but when we see one another, we’ll support each other. We’re not crowding around and cheering each other on. It’s usually an admiring nod, regardless of whether or not the other woman knows I watched her work out.

I know, if I were a dude I’d sound creepy, but watching other women do workouts helped me figure out how to work machines. Watching showed me what proper form looks like. It’s also given me future goals in my own fitness. And the best part, it’s easier to ask for help when I don’t know how to work a machine.

Let me tell you a story. Last week, I tried the Pull-Up machine for the first time. I wasn’t sure where it was and didn’t know how to use it. There was a lady nearby, and I asked her. She showed me where it was and how to use it.

Later, she came to check on me and helped me figure out the machine. I wasn’t doing as well as I hoped. Turns out I had to put it on the heaviest setting since I’m not a small woman.

Before she left, I moved to a different machine. She checked on me again and showed me another way to make it easier. No judgement, simple help. Help I appreciated.

And that’s not the best part of working out in the morning!

I Haven’t Heard The Himbo Mating Call Since

I know. “Alfie, what’s the Himbo Mating Call?”

Imagine being in the gym, and a dude is lifting some weights. He’s not quiet, but he’s not loud either. The sound draws another man over, making the lifter grunt, or breathe, louder. Then another man comes over, making the lifter get louder. By the time the lifter is practically screaming, there’s a circle of other dudes.

Now, it’s okay to grunt while lifting. Shit’s heavy. I had my share of grunts in the past. But when your grunts get louder as more people notice you, it’s obvious you’re not doing it cause shit’s heavy. You’re yelling for the attention.

The Himbo Mating Call is like revving a motorcycle or an old car. Sure, you need to do it, but you don’t need to do it every time you have the slightest crowd. It’s not as impressive as you think.

It’s Worth Getting Up Early

Working out in the morning is a more enjoyable experience than I thought it’d be. It’s peaceful, and no himbos crying for attention.

With winter here, it’ll be hard to stick with it at times, but I’ll still try it. Worst case scenario, I push my workout time back an hour or two on snow days. It’s worth it.

So yes, ladies, those morning workouts are worth it. It’s a more peaceful experience than in the afternoon.
