From Netflix and Chill to Movies and Mental Health (Newsletter)
In my several years of teaching, I have discovered a very useful tool when I want to explain a concept or an idea: movies. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out! I’m sure you’re all too well aware *yawn* that for years teachers have used, or rather tried to use, failing quite miserably might I add, this method in classrooms. But when I look back oh so fondly at those moments (yes, that was sarcasm) only black and white images and very outdated documentaries come to mind, I never got to see something in the classroom that I would, or even could actually see in a movie theater.
If you do it right, you can turn a Hollywood movie into an effective way to teach, you just have to know the angle of each film and how to explain the topic. For example, Titanic, it can be a movie about a passionate romance on a ship and ends with an unfortunate accident, or it can be a way of explaining the difference in social class from 100 years ago, and boom: you have Sociology 101 delivered by Leonardo DiCaprio.
