From Employee to Solopreneur — Making the Leap

Cons of being a Solopreneur

Being your own boss is the best feeling ever.

You get to determine your work schedule.

Don’t have to worry about office politics.

Make as much money as you want.

Don’t have to go to the office and work from home every single day.

The most important aspect is that you can make all the money in the world if you are passionate enough to do it all.

You also get to do anything your heart desires. Whether you are a writer, a coder or an artist, you can do anything you want to do.

Even though there are many pros to being a solopreneur working for yourself, you need to know the cons of what you are getting yourself into. It’s never easy to start.

You might need to work more than 12 hours a day at first.

But then things will get better.

Here are the cons of being a solopreneur.

Financial Risk

Starting a business is very much a lot of financial risk. As a solopreneur, you must use your savings to get your career off the ground.

If your family is there to help you out, providing food and shelter to you, that should not be a problem. Just don’t take it for granted, and work as hard as you can to make it one day.

The problem is, you might be too comfortable living with your family that you don’t have to worry about your survival.

People who don’t think about starting a family or want to stay single will have problems eventually. You will fail because you don’t have the desire to succeed.

No Safety Net

As an employee, you get to enjoy a stable income every single month of the year. You can easily get a credit card. You don’t have to push yourself too hard to grow and improve. Most importantly, you have money coming in every single month without needing to worry whether there is going to be food on the table.

When you can live with your parents, having no safety net is not a problem. But this must be considered when you are living alone and don’t have anyone to be with.

Overwhelming Responsibility

There is just so much you need to do as a solopreneur. Not only do you have to worry about your main scope of work, but you also have to learn how to persuade people, negotiate deals, do all the marketing you can for yourself and branding. You are also in charge of finances and must keep track of where your money is going.

Work is a lot to deal with, but it will get easier over time.

Isolation

Without colleagues, it will be lonely at first. You can start working with people when you outsource your work to virtual assistants eventually.

But you have to weather the storm of being alone for 2–5 years, depending on the speed that you are going.

If you don’t earn a significant amount of money in time, you will have to take on all the work that is needed yourself.

This is something you have to know.

Without people to work with, it is a motivation to make a significant amount of money soon, to work with people again as colleagues.

No Guarantee of Success

Finally, there is no guarantee of success. Yes, you will succeed if you work hard every day. You will have to learn things every day. Be able to adapt and be flexible about your workflow and your approach to your work. Always experiment with different ways of working and improving until you find some way to do work at its optimum level.

Conclusion

Being self-employed and a solopreneur may seem like an awesome way of enjoying your life and work. But it comes with lots of cons. It includes financial risk, no safety net, overwhelming responsibility, isolation, and no guarantee for success. Know the cons before diving into the world of solopreneurship.

If you are struggling and find it hard initially, don’t lose hope. This is just normal. Work every day and don’t burn out.

You will get there. Trust me.

Make sure that you are passionate about what you do. If not, don’t even start it.
