PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

From Dry Desert Landscapes to Frozen Spring Blossoms

Week 138 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

One week later and my life has turned upside down. I left the dry desert landscapes behind and landed in the middle of a lush green countryside. Spring is painting the gardens with colorful blossoms and I’m cold.

I’m once again in one of those transition phases in my life. In between jobs. In between continents. In between homes. Just give me one more week and I’ll be settled.

Yes, on Thursday we left the desert and our home on the coast of Namibia behind to drive a few hundred kilometers inland to reach the international airport in time.

A few hours later, we were up in the air looking back down onto Namibia without knowing when we'll return again. But that's how it always is. In our life. We take off to touch down somewhere else again.

On Friday morning this touchdown happened to be amidst a gray and rainy Frankfurt Airport. Welcome back to Germany. One more quick and uncomplicated train ride later and we arrived at my parents' place. With all our luggage.

But we didn't have much time to rest and settle. Saturday morning we got into the car and drove 3 hours to our new job where we were expected to show up for the safety meeting and opening day at the new airfield.

It was a long day, with lots of new faces and many new names to learn. Also, a new language as the Bavarians certainly speak the most difficult dialect of all Germans and for a foreign speaker like David is, this was very challenging to follow.

This is where we’ll be living for the next 7 months. The first one on the right will be our trailer. And tonight, we fell asleep not long after the sun had set.

The next day we were up again for a first aid course refresher. It’s always something I’d love to learn more. There is just so much we can do when arriving at a scene and no medics are around yet.

Later that afternoon, we left our new home behind and drove back to my parents' place. We need the upcoming week to first unpack our bags and organize our belongings before settling into trailer life again.

But, it’s cold. That cold, the tiny drops of water left on the leaves froze overnight. Yes, it’ll take a few days or weeks until we learn to adjust to this colder climate again.

And my father decided a little bit of sunshine is enough to have a barbecue in the garden. Yes, there’s no such thing as a "grill season". Not for him. So, off we went, equipped with hats, the skiing jacket and a bottle of mulled wine to withstand the cold.

Fortunately, it ended up being a rather sunny and warm day and we enjoyed sitting in the garden watching the songbirds fly across and pick seeds from the feeders my dad set up all around the garden.
