From Birds to Buildings and Chunky ‘Monkeys’ to Skeletal Remains…
My third week in photos for September

There’s one great thing about photo-a-day challenges and that is it gets me off my butt and out walking. I’ve done thousands of steps this week in search of some great shots — and I haven’t been disappointed!
All week, we’ve also had spectacular sunsets most nights. I’d already loaded up my photo for the day to Instagram on Sunday when the lead photo happened. It’s incredible that mere seconds later, it changes. You have to be armed and ready!
All in all, this was possibly the most exciting photography week for me. Read on and see why…
September 15
I know I’ll always find something spectacular at my local park, and although a duck is nothing special, a duck and a reflection are!

Knowing the Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery had opened to the public after 8 months of strike action, I was eager to go beyond the gates and see what families were being faced with.
I was horrified. It requires a separate story to highlight how disgraceful the grounds are. I’m particularly concerned because the cemetery makes it quite clear that their responsibility is for the grounds and not individual plots.
What was also noticeable was the number of pudgy marmots scampering around! I saw half a dozen, and could even get quite close to them. You had to really watch your step if you wandered off the pathways as there were deep holes where they have been burrowing.

September 17
It was a cloudy afternoon but warm. I drove to a spot just past the Atwater market and then walked a 7-km loop which took me to the western tip of the Old Port.
I hadn’t been in this area for years and was horrified at how many condominiums had been built — at least two dozen!
Thankfully there was something historical still in place: the Five Roses Flour Factory.

September 18
What do you do when the day was dull and nothing much inspired a shot? Thankfully I’ve shops opposite my apartment. They’ve got a selection of Fall plants in pots for purchase. Many of them were rather dead-looking, but I like dead-looking.
I also like that fluffy grass, so I kept this little frond in my picture.
I used my Nikon Coolpix today and it’s less bulky and it looked like it was going to rain. I can fit it in my sling bag; I can’t fit my Canon!

September 19
Another drab day. I had a few errands to run at the supermarket and spied some pumpkins as I left. I snapped a shot with my iPhone just in case nothing better came up.
The sunset was cool, but my photos weren’t so much.
Pumpkins it is!

September 20
I explored another few rows of Ruelles and took dozens of pictures. It was a toss-up between this shot and more dead stuff against a blue sky. I chose the Starling picture since it will be more difficult to recapture.
The sky was an incredible blue; there are no filters in ANY of my photographs for the record.

September 21
I went straight from work to my favourite place to wander; the bird sanctuary in Lasalle. It was a bonanza day for wildlife! I took photographs of a Downy Woodpecker, A Black-crowned Night Heron, Flying Geese, a Ring-billed Gull, a furry caterpillar, a Monarch and a small White Butterfly.
What did I choose as my picture? A flower!
This was a super hard decision, but, in the end, the American Black Elderberry had the edge. Its intricate mauve skeleton, a few remaining berries and a soft green backdrop are a winner!

Thanks to Dennett at Weeds and Wildflowers for initiating this weekly photography challenge. I come and go, but the more regulars include Anne Bonfert, Mia Verita, Penny Grubb, Erika Burkhalter and Kim Zuch.
